The D-PLM group develops methodologies that integrate product design, manufacturing and service
to create a novel closed-loop life-cycle modelling and synthesis framework, self-resilient production
system, which can self-recover from engineering changes and 6-sigma faults. In doing so, it breaks
new ground by establishing a research field on the interface between tangible product design,
manufacturing and intangible services. This will impact a range of high value products, with
potentially profound effects on PLM methodologies in a number of industries including automotive,
aerospace, consumer goods and healthcare.

This PhD studentship will investigate the development of algorithms for closing the loop of product
life-cycle specifically between Design, Manufacturing and Service Phases. The mathematical
framework will be developed to integrate this information that will contribute towards
improvements in product quality and reliability during different phases of PLM. The research will
also develop guidelines for effective use of models during engineering change.

Candidates should be motivated to work with multidisciplinary teams of researchers developing
mathematical frameworks and methodologies for automotive industries. Candidates with
Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, computer engineering or equivalent background are
needed with good knowledge and experience of one or more of the following subjects is essential:
numerical programming, need a good experience in any of the programming languages (C, C++, java,
etc), experience in software (such as SAS, MATLAB, etc.), knowledge of database programming,
simulations. Excellent communication skills and mathematical skill would be required in this PhD.

The Digital Laboratory is a combination of physical and virtual spaces, comprising a state of the art building at the heart of the Warwick campus.
