Subject: Program for tomorrow
To: "Godbole, Anant" <godbolea at mail.etsu.edu>, kevja at clemson.edu
Dear Anant and Kevin,
I've attached a program for tomorrow's events. All activities besides lunch
will take place in Robinson Hall, Room 125. A campus map is available
here:
http://www.unca.edu/maps/campus-map
Parking is open (no tags or passes needed), as long as you don't park in
handicapped or reserved spaces...the spaces lined in green are fair game,
and there should be plenty of parking near Robinson Hall.
Lunch will be held on the quad if the weather's nice, and in the Robinson
Hall lobby otherwise. I'd be happy to lead an informal campus tour around
lunch time if anyone would like one.
The student talks are 15 minutes apiece, with 5-10 minutes between them.
Students should aim for 13-15 minutes, and we can use the intervening time
for Q&A as needed. There are no concurrent sessions, so there shouldn't be
a problem with people running from room to room. I figured we can each
introduce our own students.
With regards to the "introductions and welcome": I figured that each of us
could say a few words about where our programs are right now, since I know
we're all at different points in the process. This will give some context
for the progress in students' work: Kevin's students are likely much more
polished at this point, mine are midstream, and I imagine Anant's are just
getting started in some cases.
With regards to the "directors' panel": I figured that this could be a
chance for the faculty members to say a little bit about the way we have the
programs structured and how the students have done/are doing their work. I
don't mean this to be a one-way panel so much as a chance for a discussion
of our REU programs, during which the students can raise questions or make
comments as they feel appropriate. We could simply let this time be a free
period during which the students can mingle, meet each other, network, and
ask questions about graduate school.
I plan on treating Jeffrey Powell to dinner around 6:00 or so, and anyone
who'd like to stick around for dinner (faculty or student) should feel free
to join us. I don't know where we'll go for dinner, but it'll likely depend
on how many people choose to tag along.
Does this all sound good?
I'm looking forward to it!
Patrick
