Dear REU coordinator,
We are writing to you on behalf of Brown University's Symposium for
Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences (SUMS). SUMS is an annual
conference which is designed to foster greater undergraduate interest
and scholarship in mathematics. The conference features both invited
faculty speakers and undergraduate presenters. It is an excellent
opportunity for student researchers to present their work, especially
in a more relaxed environment than the national meetings. We are
writing to request that you encourage your REU students from summer
2009 to attend and submit an abstract for consideration. Students will
be able to showcase their work either with a talk or a poster.
SUMS will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Brown University in
Providence, RI. We will be able to provide a limited amount of
compensation for student speakers' travel expenses, and we will
connect all visiting students who need housing with host students.
For more information, and to register and submit abstracts, please
visit our website at http://math.brown.edu/SUMS.
This year's featured topic will be Math and the Environment, and the
faculty speakers will be:
Professor Andrea Bertozzi, UCLA
Professor Kerry Emanuel, MIT
Professor Ken Golden, University of Utah
Professor Brad Marston, Brown University
Professor Sergei Tabachnikov, Penn State University
Student talks may be on any original research or topic of interest in
a math-related field. They do not need to have a connection with the
conference theme (Math and the Environment). We will accept
presentation proposals on a rolling basis, so students interested in
presenting are encouraged to submit abstracts as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
SUMS Board of Directors
Andy Furnas (Andrew_Furnas at brown.edu)
Jenna Kaye-Kauderer (Jenna_Kaye-Kauderer at brown.edu)
Alex Kruckman (Alex_Kruckman at brown.edu)
