(Aimed at this year's undergraduates)
Folks, this looks like a great opportunity to present
some work, and meet some new people.

Dear Professors Calkin and James,

I am writing to you on behalf of Brown University's Symposium for
Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences (SUMS). SUMS is an annual
conference which is designed to foster greater undergraduate interest
and scholarship in mathematics, with both invited faculty speakers and
undergraduate presenters. It is an excellent opportunity for student
researchers to present their work, especially because the environment is
much more friendly and less hectic than the national meetings. This
year, students will be able to showcase their work either in a lecture
or at a poster session.

I had a great experience delivering a lecture at SUMS 2007, which
covered research that I had conducted the previous summer. As
co-director of SUMS 2008, I hope to create a similarly rewarding
atmosphere for our undergraduate speakers this year (including myself;
I'm planning on speaking about the research I'm currently working on
here at the Claremont Colleges REU!). Perhaps the most important aspect
to fostering such an atmosphere is finding student speakers and
attendees who are energetic, thoughtful, and excited about their work.
It is for this reason that I ask you to encourage your REU students to
submit an abstract for consideration for our undergraduate lecture
series or poster session. While ideally all abstracts would be
submitted by the end of the 2007, we welcome submissions at any time.

The next SUMS will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Brown
University in Providence, RI. Though funding is still pending, we
expect to be able to provide a limited amount of compensation for
student speakers' travel expenses. We will also connect all visiting
student attendees with host students. For more information, feel free
to email me back or visit our website at http://math.brown.edu/SUMS.

I hope that you're having an enjoyable summer!

Thank you,

Aaron Mazel-Gee
