We are in the process of expanding our Systems Engineering initiative, including new degrees at the graduate level in a truly demand-driven development. The Utah Legislature, motivated by a big push from the local industry and a booming economy, has supported the establishment of fresh new Systems Engineering programs, including the addition of several faculty lines to support that effort. This cycle, we have opened the search for two open-rank tenure-track/tenured faculty positions in Systems Engineering with an anticipated start date in Fall 2023.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah (https://mech.utah.edu) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions with an anticipated start date in Fall 2023. With support from the Utah legislature and a desire to meet local, national and international industry needs, the Department of Mechanical Engineering is rapidly growing its Systems Engineering programs and has recently added four new faculty lines in this area. As a result, we are looking for candidates with research expertise in all areas of Mechanical or Systems Engineering, with preference given to applicants focusing on aerospace, defense, computational modeling, robotics, model-based system engineering, SysML, or systems architecture.

Candidates will be expected to teach one graduate core or elective course in systems engineering every semester. A small set of such classes include, but is not limited to, model-based systems engineering, SysML, simulation, statistics, requirements, integration and systems architecture.

Successful candidates must also have a demonstrated track record of high-quality research as evidenced by scholarly publications, and they must exhibit strong potential (junior faculty) or an established record (senior faculty) of extramural funding. Applicants should have an earned Ph.D. or Sc.D. in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field prior to starting the position. Exceptional candidates will be considered at the level of associate or full professor.

The University of Utah is a tier 1 research institution that is home to more than 30,000 students, world-class faculty and researchers, a medical campus, and many start-up companies. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade, fueled by the State of Utah’s Engineering Initiative, and currently houses more than 40 tenure-line faculty members, over 1,000 undergraduate and 250 graduate students (140 PhD students).

The University of Utah campus is situated in Salt Lake City, a growing, increasingly diverse, metropolitan city with a population of 1M nestled against the backdrop of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. The greater SLC valley is an important economic hub of the mountain west and is home to a number of large technology and fortune 500 companies. SLC residents enjoy a highly accessible and walkable downtown with vibrant restaurants, sports, nightlife, LGBTQ+ and cultural events. Salt Lake City residents enjoy easy access to national parks (8 within a few hours’ drive), world-class skiing/snowboarding (7 resorts within 1 hour), hiking, fishing, biking, and rafting/kayaking. In addition, faculty members enjoy free access to public transportation and the convenience of an international airport located only 15 minutes from campus.
