as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor. Akwum is a computational scientist who
has been working on quantitative credit risk modeling, Bayesian statistical
inverse problems, and optimization problems governed by differential
equations. Akwum has two PhD degrees, one in Economics obtained from the
Justus Liebig University, Germany, in 2010, and a second in Applied
Mathematics, from the Otto von Guericke University & Max Planck Institute,
Germany, in 2016. Prior to joining ISE, he held postdoctoral research
positions at George Mason University and the University of Maryland. His
rich educational and professional paths have provided him chances to
interact with people and students from three continents and a plethora of

Mohler Lab renovations optimize facility for collaboration

Renovations to Harold S. Mohler Laboratory have made the home of
Lehigh’s ISE Department a more high-tech, comfortable, and functional
environment for learning and research. Improvements like these make an
impact on the educational enterprise. Today, thanks to an investment of
$250K, students and faculty have greater access to advanced equipment, more
inviting common spaces, and easier scheduling. The overall goal was to
bring a more contemporary feel to Mohler Lab while fostering a greater

Lehigh has been on the forefront of machine learning since ISE Prof. Sutton
Monro’s celebrated 1951 contribution

The stochastic gradient method is the workhorse of machine learning—and
thus most of artificial intelligence. The main idea of the stochastic
gradient method was derived in a seminal 1951 paper published in The Annals
of Mathematical Statistics by Herbert Robbins and Sutton Monro. A few years
later, Monro would join the Lehigh ISE faculty and go on to teach
industrial engineering for 26 years, retiring in 1985. Click for full text
