Dear colleagues,
NIST (Engineering Laboratory/Systems Integration Division) anticipates the need for Engineers (0800) and Computer Scientists (1550) at the following pay band levels and salaries: ZP-III ($69,581-$115,025), ZP-IV ($99,172-$152,352) and ZP-V ($137,849-$166,500). Minimum qualifications for Federal positions may be found at https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/). Permanent appointments are open only to US citizens, but non-citizens will be considered for term appointments. We are specifically seeking applicants with strong expertise closely coupled with Smart Manufacturing, one of NIST EL's strategic goal areas.
Our vision is to enable the next generation of innovative and competitive manufacturing through advances in measurement science. With an emphasis on smart, EL research projects aim to speed development, adoption, and integration of leading-edge intelligent technologies to advance U.S. manufacturing. Through research that stretches the limits of measurement science and pushes the envelope of current measurement and test capabilities, EL will:
* Safely increase the versatility, autonomy, and rapid re-tasking of intelligent robots and automation technologies for smart manufacturing and cyber-physical systems applications;
* Enable real-time monitoring, control, and performance optimization of smart manufacturing systems in the factories of small, medium, and large companies;
* Enable rapid, agile, and cost-effective production of complex, first-to-market products through advanced manufacturing processes and equipment; and
* Facilitate straightforward integration of engineering information systems used in complex manufacturing and construction networks to improve product and process performance.
The jobs are located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, a budding Northern suburb of Washington, DC. Sitting on a spacious 579-acre campus, NIST Gaithersburg is only a short 10-minute drive from the metro train system serving the DC region. Featuring on-campus sporting facilities, a childcare center, museum, and cafe, NIST continually ranks as a top Federal Government venue to work by its employees.
We seek outstanding candidates for multiple positions in all areas relevant to Smart Manufacturing including, but not limited to: (i) manufacturing informatics, focusing on information modeling, data integration and management, (ii) product, process, and machine modeling, (iii) robotics, (iv) additive manufacturing, (v) real time decision-making and optimization, (vi) cyber-physical systems, (vii) (big) data analytics, (viii) simulation, (ix) model-based (systems) engineering, and (x) shop floor software development.
Successful candidates will join a strong manufacturing group on campus and will have a unique opportunity to help shape our vision and research agenda in Smart Manufacturing. Candidates should have a distinguished academic record, exceptional potential for world-class research, and a commitment to collaborative interdisciplinary activities. Successful candidates will conduct original research, engage with industry collaborators, and contribute to standards activities.
We will consider candidates holding PhD, Master's, or Bachelor's degrees. Candidates must hold a degree in any Engineering discipline, Computer Science, or other disciplines closely related to Smart Manufacturing. Related work experience in manufacturing or a related sector is viewed favorably, but not mandatory, and should be highlighted in the research statement. For more information about NIST perspectives on Smart Manufacturing and how it relates to other strategic goal areas and programs, please visit https://www.nist.gov/el/goals-programs/smart-manufacturing.
To ensure full consideration for a position, the application must be emailed by January 1, 2020, but the committee will continue to accept applications until positions are filled. Interested and qualified applicants should email a curriculum vitae or resume, including a statement of research (less than 1500 words), and a list of at least three references to SIDjobs at nist.gov<mailto:SIDjobs at nist.gov>. Applicants should also make arrangements for their recommendation letters to be emailed directly to SIDjobs at nist.gov<mailto:SIDjobs at nist.gov> no later than February 15, 2020. When positions are available, vacancy announcements will be posted on WWW.USAJOBS.GOV<http://WWW.USAJOBS.GOV>. A background check will be required for employment in this position. The Department of Commerce is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
