The National Science Foundation’s Infrastructure Management and Extreme
Events (IMEE) program supports multidisciplinary research on the impact of
hazards and extreme events upon civil infrastructure and society. An
emphasis is placed upon research on the mitigation of, preparedness for,
response to and recovery from multi-hazard disasters. The program attempts
to integrate multiple issues from the fields of civil, mechanical,
transportation and system engineering, as well as from sociology,
psychology, economics, geography, political science, urban planning,
epidemiology, natural and physical science and computer science.
*Submission windows:* February 1-16, 2016; September 1-15, 2016
/Recent Funding Opportunities of Note/
*Larger-scale Proposals*. The Division of Civil, Mechanical and
Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI)—of which IMEE is part—is committed to
supporting both single-investigator and team research, including
larger-scale unsolicited proposals that are not feasible through a series
of smaller projects and are not achievable by a single principal
investigator (PI). These larger-scale proposals may request longer time
frames (up to five years) and larger budgets (typically not exceeding
$1,500,000) that reflect the scope of work. Larger-scale project
descriptions must make a convincing case that collaborative contributions
will be greater than the sum of each individual investigator's
contribution, and are expected to include a Collaboration Plan. PIs are
strongly encouraged to discuss the objectives, scope, research team, and
budget of larger-scale proposals with the appropriate CMMI program
director(s) prior to proposal preparation and submission.
*INFEWS*. A new NSF solicitation relevant to hazards was recently posted:
Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy and Water Systems (INFEWS,
solicitation 16-524). Proposals are due by 22 March 2016. See
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16524/nsf16524.htm.
*CRISP*. The Critical Resilient Interdependent Infrastructure Systems and
Processes (CRISP) solicitation (16-519) was also recently posted. Proposals
are due by 9 March 2016. See
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16519/nsf16519.htm.
The IMEE program participates in both INFEWS and CRISP.
/Note on Future Submissions to IMEE/
*New PAPPG*. A new Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG)
has been posted (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappguide/nsf16001/).
The new PAPPG contains a number of significant changes pertaining to
submitted proposals and is effective 25 January 2016.
