The 2014 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) Health Applications Track is
being coordinated by Stephen D. Roberts (roberts at ncsu.edu) from North
Carolina State University and Todd R. Huschka (Huschka.Todd at mayo.edu) from
Mayo Clinic. Please see the following *Call for Papers and
Presentations*that describes the Track and gives the Contributed Paper
Deadlines as well
as the Poster and Ph.D. Colloquium Deadlines. You are urged to consider
offering a submission.

*As a part of the 2014 WSC, an Introductory Tutorial titled "Optimization
within Health Care Simulation" will be given by Tarun Molan Lal and Thomas
Roh of Mayo Clinic. This tutorial will be a valuable introduction to the
use of simulation in health care, particularly the applied use of
optimization in a health care simulation setting, and will be of special
interest to those who would like to be more knowledgeable about healthcare
simulation. *

*To create greater interest in the 2014 WSC Healthcare Applications Track
the "best" papers from this track will be invited to contribute to a
"Special Edition" of the IIE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering
(*www.tandfonline.com/toc/uhse20/current)*. The special edition will focus
on "Healthcare Systems Simulation" - simulation being the methodology focus
and healthcare being the context. Papers submitted to the WSC Health
Applications Track who receive exceptionally positive reviews will be asked
to submit a full paper to the review process for the journal. Authors will
be notified on June 6, 2014 if their paper will be considered also for
journal publication. The potential journal paper will be due September 1,
2014, so that eventual publication should occur in the spring of 2015.
Obviously there must be some negotiation so that the Proceedings paper does
not jeopardize the contribution of journal paper and yet maintains its
substance. Also it must be recognized that papers which meet the review
process for the WSC conference may not meet the review for the journal.
However, the deadlines should permit relatively quick decisions.*

*Healthcare Applications Track*

*2014 Winter Simulation Conference in Savannah, Georgia*

*Track Coordinators:* Stephen D. Roberts (roberts at ncsu.edu) from North
Carolina State University and Todd R. Huschka (Huschka.Todd at mayo.edu) from
Mayo Clinic.

*Background:* Simulation has provided critical decision support for
operational and strategic planning and decision making that individual
providers (doctors/nurses, clinics, hospitals) face, as well as for policy
issues that must be addressed by larger administering systems (e.g.,
insurance companies and governments). Traditionally, this Healthcare track
has been broad in focus, incorporating discrete event, system dynamics,
and/or Monte Carlo simulations, with a variety of applications. A common
thread is the use of simulation tools to provide insights or to inform
decisions for improved health care outcomes. Also welcome are new modeling
tools that address challenges with the conceptualization or implementation
of health care systems.

Healthcare applications have included, but not limited to: admissions and
control, hospital capacity planning, ancillary services, outpatient access,
nurse staffing and scheduling, outpatient flow and capacity, emergency
department systems, appointment scheduling, medical decision making,
optimization in medicine, epidemic modeling, healthcare policy analysis

*Contributed Paper Deadlines:*

· *April 1, 2014*: Electronically submit contributed papers not
previously published or presented. Each submission must be a 5- to 12-page
paper, including an abstract of not more than 150 words. The page size in
the proceedings is 8.5 by 11 inches (21.6 cm by 27.9 cm). The overall
length of the paper should be at least 5 proceedings pages. Papers should
be at most 12 pages, except for introductory tutorials, advanced tutorials,
and panel sessions, for which the limit is 15 pages. Submission implies
that an author will attend WSC 2014 and present the paper, and all
clearance required for publication of the paper will be obtained by July
16, 2014. Use of the authors' templates in one of the following formats is
required: Microsoft Word or LaTeX. Submissions must be made through the WSC
website, www.wintersim.org.

· *June 2, 2014*: Contributors will be notified whether their paper
has been accepted.

· *July 16, 2014*: Authors electronically provide a final
manuscript meeting all technical and format requirements to the Proceedings
Editor.

*Poster and Ph.D. Colloquium Deadlines:*

· *August 18, 2014*: Deadline to electronically submit 2-page
extended abstracts for presentations in the Poster Session and Ph.D.
Student Colloquium. Submissions must be made through the WSC website,
www.wintersim.org.

· *September 22, 2014*: Notification of acceptance to authors
(including details about submitting slides, and formats of the posters).

· *October 6, 2014*: Final extended abstracts due.

· *October 27, 2014*: Slides for the Poster Madness session due.

· *December 7, 2014*: Bring your poster to the WSC 2014.
