The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at the University of San Diego, an independent Catholic University, invites applications for tenure track faculty positions in mechanical engineering and industrial & systems engineering, with preference for assistant professor level positions.
USD provides a high quality undergraduate education by emphasizing small classes and a high level of faculty-student interaction. The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering has recently ranked as among the top 25 programs at non-Ph.D. granting institutions by U.S. News and World Report.
The school currently houses electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and industrial and systems engineering departments. The preference in these hires will be for faculty that can teach in one of the disciplinary areas of need in the mechanical or the industrial and systems engineering department but also can teach and perform research in one the new development areas listed below.
Developmental Areas
1. Sustainability including Blue, Green, Clean, Sustainable Design, Sustainable Manufacturing
2. Bioengineering
3. Engineering Education
Disciplinary Teaching Needs
* Industrial and Systems Engineering: big data, data analytics, data -mining, operations research and simulation, sustainable engineering
* Mechanical Engineering: Thermo-Fluids, Mechanics-Materials, Engineering Design
We anticipate that these positions will start in the fall of 2014 and that candidates will have completed their PhD by that time in areas aligned with the school disciplines or the developmental areas. At least one degree in industrial and systems or mechanical engineering is expected.
We welcome faculty that would desire to work in an interdisciplinary cluster to build opportunities for faculty/student collaborations and promote interdisciplinary strength within the undergraduate curriculum. These faculty candidates will have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and fostering a climate of inclusion and diversity.
Required Conditions for Employment
* A PhD in an Engineering Discipline including Engineering Education completed by the time of employment
* At least one degree in a USD engineering discipline - or closely related (Electrical, Industrial and Systems, Mechanical)
Desired Conditions for Employment
* Demonstrated teaching capacity in one of the developmental focus areas (bioengineering, sustainability, embedded, education)
* Teaching philosophy and /or experience that demonstrates knowledge of pedagogy and value consistent with USD
* A demonstrated commitment to mentoring undergraduates and fostering a climate of inclusion and diversity
* Contributes to making the faculty better representative as role models for prospective student populations
