The Lean Best Practice Award 2011 Highlights

The Lean Division of IIE launched its inaugural industry best practice award in 2011. This award recognized organizations for their innovative and effective implementation of Lean principles and practices that delivered exemplary business performance improvement. The Lean Best Practice Award 2011 was a great success. Seven teams were selected as finalists from all submissions and were allowed to present their case in the IIE Annual Conference 2011, Reno, Nevada. The 2011 finalist teams represented the following organizations.



Beckman Coulter

Care Logistics

IBM

Pelco Products Inc.

University of Michigan Health Systems

Vought Aircraft Industries Inc.

Xerox



The award committee bestowed the Lean Best Practice Award 2011 to the top three teams who accepted their awards from IIE president. The IBM and Xerox were tied at the first place winner and the Vought Aircraft was the second place winner.

The Lean Best Practice Award 2012

The Lean Division of IIE is launching its second industry best practice award and welcomes applications from organizational teams for the Lean Best Practice Award 2012.



The Lean Best Practice Award recognizes organizations for innovative and effective implementation of lean principles and practices that deliver exemplary business performance improvement. Every year IIE conducts the award competition to promote successful implementation of lean by recognizing best in class industries and sharing their stories with others. Teams from Universities with successful lean implementations are eligible for this award. This is a very prestigious award for a team and their organization.



The award will be bestowed to the top three teams and be presented at the upcoming IIE Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla., May 19-23, 2012.

Eligibility Criteria

 1.  Any team (2 or more members) of any organization who wants to showcase their successful implementation of lean concepts.
 2.  The team must demonstrate innovative uses of lean tools and techniques for its measurable outcomes.
 3.  There is no limit on the number of entries from an organization.

Awarding Process

 *   All entries will be pre-screened to select up to eight finalist teams.
 *   All finalist teams will be required to attend the IIE annual conference and present their cases.
 *   Top three teams will be selected and announced at the keynote session of the IIE annual conference.

Evaluation Criteria

 *   The lean implementation initiative is innovative.
 *   The lean implementation initiative had clear measurable performance objectives, and they were met
 *   The lean implementation approach is simple and straightforward.
 *   The lean implementation initiative used lean tools and techniques.
 *   The lean implementation initiative derived significant and measurable outcomes such as cost reduction, lead time reduction, quality improvement, safety improvement, etc.
 *   The lean implementation is sustainable.
 *   The quality of the presentation is excellent including problem statement, clear descriptions, and metrics with visuals.

Your narrative document must be a maximum of 5 standard pages using a minimum font size of 10 points. Supporting materials or samples may be included if they are directly applicable to your entry; however, they will not be returned. You may also include support letter from the top management.



Entries should include:

 *   A completed submission form (Available at http://www.iienet2.org/Details.aspx?id=27880)
 *   Any relevant supporting materials
 *   Support letter from top management



Deadline: The complete application package is due to the chair of the committee by December 16, 2011. Applicants must send their submissions electronically – preferably as email attachment. In case of large electronic documents, applicants may upload them in an online repository (i.e. www.yousendit.com<http://www.yousendit.com/>) and provide the access to the chair of the committee.
