After 7 years in industry I found that virtually none of the IE graduates we hired were particularly adept at some of the "old fashioned" tools of classical IE. This included:

****Work measurement skills,
****Time & Motion Study ability,
****An ability to identify sources of variability

Capabilities in the above areas were lacking. The new hires were, however, quite proficient in the use of computers (e.g., EXCEL, VBA, C++, Simulation)

As a result of these encounters I have a few questions for the members of the group:

(1) Is your institution still teaching these "old fashioned"concepts and, if so, in what format (e.g., lectures, computer simulations, hands-on labs)?

(2) Any idea as to why this deficiency exists?

(3) Are these "old fashioned" concepts included in the (supposedly) new methods of "Lean Manufacturing," Six Sigma," or Theory of Constraints?

(4) Do you feel that this is a problem or have I just been unlucky in my new hires (e.g., from about a dozen different IE departments)?

Thanks for any feedback you may have on this matter.

Regards,

Jim Ignizio
