Call for Papers
2010 International Material Handling Research Colloquium (IMHRC 2010)
21- 24 June 2010 ▪ Milwaukee, WI, USA
PDF version of this call for papers is available on the CICMHE website at <http://www.mhia.org/CICMHE/colloquium> www.mhia.org/CICMHE/colloquium
The College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) is soliciting extended abstracts for the 11th International Material Handling Research Colloquium (IMHRC) to be held on 21-24 June 2010 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. IMHRC 2010 industrial sponsors RedPrairie and HK Systems are providing generous support for social events and end-user participation. The academic host will be Marquette University’s Center for Supply Chain Management.
Purpose
The purpose of the Colloquium is to share research accomplishments and directions in the field of material handling and facility logistics by facilitating dialog and collaborative, practical research between suppliers, industrial end-users, and teams of university researchers. As in the past, the Colloquium will operate on a philosophy of complete participation by all participants in all the Colloquium events. The Colloquium program includes a mix of invited presentations, facilitated discussions, poster sessions, warehouse/plant tours, social events, and new in 2010, an “Industry Day” of interactive sessions with representatives from both the end user and supplier communities.
Papers Solicited
Papers for the Colloquium are requested from researchers performing research and development work in material handling, facility logistics, facility planning and design, supply chain planning/execution or closely related fields of study. Papers are encouraged from both university-based researchers and industry researchers (both the supplier and end-user communities).
Research and development topics eligible for inclusion are those that address issues related to the planning, design, selection and/or operation of manufacturing, warehousing/distribution, logistics and service facilities, equipment and systems, as they relate to the movement, storage, control and protection of material flowing through the supply chain as part of production and distribution processes.
Authors are encouraged to submit one of the following types of papers:
• System/Application paper: In such a paper, a new material handling logistics system and/or application is presented, along with a preliminary modeling approach. The emphasis in system/application papers is on a rich description of the system/application.
• Focused modeling paper: In such a paper, a type of facility, system or equipment is described, one of its key aspects is modeled, then the methodology for solving such a model is presented along with testing results. The emphasis in focused modeling papers is great depth on only one well-motivated aspect of a well-motivated type of facility, system or equipment.
• Paradigm paper: In such a paper, a new paradigm or framework for considering facilities, systems or equipment is rigorously introduced. The emphasis is on opening new avenues for thinking, exploring, designing, representing and modeling such facilities, systems or equipment.
Survey papers or software packages encompassing known analytical procedures will not be considered.
The deadline for submitting an e-mail/letter of intent plus an extended abstract of current or recently completed work is due no later than 15 January 2010. E-mail extended abstracts to Mike Ogle (mogle at mhia.org) at MHIA.
Those receiving this Call are encouraged to share it with co-workers or colleagues who are pursuing material handling and facility logistics related research topics.
Review and Selection
Participation in the colloquium is by invitation only, based on a competitive review process of the extended abstracts. Primary authors cannot be students or post-docs.
The criteria for paper selection include:
• Evidence of original work, new knowledge or design problem solutions;
• Potential for the transfer to actual industrial practice;
• Alignment with the above guidelines;
• Readability of the paper and respect of format guidelines.
Following review of the extended abstracts, formal invitations to participate will be sent at the end of January 2010.
The final papers, due on 30 April 2010 will be limited in length to 10 pages following a format guideline available on the web site of the Colloquium. All papers will be available and distributed via the web in advance of the Colloquium.
Publication of Proceedings
The accepted papers will be published in book format as “Progress in Material Handling Research: 2010”, the latest vintage in the renowned series of books. To view the Table of Contents and abstracts from previous colloquia papers, please visit the colloquium website at www.mhia.org/cicmhe/colloquium.
Conditions and Costs for Participating
By accepting an invitation to attend, participants are agreeing to submit a final paper by 30 April 2010 and attend the full duration of the Colloquium. We’ve found that greatest value lies in the interaction between participants during the entire event. Those that do not attend the full duration must pay a registration fee equivalent to the full cost of individual participation and are not eligible for assistance described as follows:
On-site costs will be paid by the sponsors (cost of housing based on shared double occupancy, organized meal functions and social gatherings) for all invited academic researchers registered as the primary presenter of research. Participation by co-authors must be approved and requires payment of a registration fee. Additional costs apply for a single room. Travel costs to and from the IMHRC hotel will be paid by the attendees. Spouse, guest, co-author registration expenses are paid by the attendees prior to the event (fee schedule provided upon acceptance).
Brief History and Sponsors
The first Research Colloquium took place June 1990 on the corporate campus of Litton Industrial Automated Systems in Hebron, Kentucky. The success of this Colloquium prompted the conduct of other Colloquia: in 1992 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the corporate headquarters of Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley; in 1994 in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the corporate headquarters of Rapistan Demag Corporation; in 1996 in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, at the corporate headquarters of Vanderlande Industries; in 1998 in Chandler, Arizona at the headquarters of Motorola Corporation; in 2000 in York, Pennsylvania at the headquarters of St. Onge Company; in 2002 in Portland, Maine at the headquarters Southworth International; in 2004 in Graz, Austria on the campus of Technical University of Graz; in 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the headquarters of Daifuku America; and in 2008 in Dortmund, Germany hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) at the University of Dortmund.
Ten hardbound books have been published as a direct result of the Colloquia based on the research issues presented and discussed. All past Colloquia were sponsored by the College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) and the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA), plus local corporate and academic hosts. In addition, the first six colloquia were co-sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).
