Promise Grants for the 2008-2009 Research Program. The Request for

Promise Grants - Promise Grants provide up to $1.5M annually over five
years to support programs with collaborative and cross-disciplinary
research projects that provide integrated approaches to solving critical
challenges to the rapid translation of scientific discoveries into new
or enhanced clinical tools and applications that have the greatest
potential to significantly reduce breast cancer incidence and/or
mortality within the next decade. Integrated programs of research
projects addressing critical challenges in population disparities in
breast cancer outcomes and triple negative breast cancer are of special
interest and may receive funding priority. Pre-applications are required
prior to starting a full application.

a members-only publication. We hope our membership finds great value in
the publication for yourself and your constituents. It has been brought
to our attention that some of our members are not following the

Federal Funding Opportunities
Department of Defense (DoD)
DoD will be soliciting proposals for a third round of funding under its
FY 2008 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. This program
provides up to $850,000 in early-stage R&D funding directly to small
technology companies (or individual entrepreneurs who form a company).
Firms capable of conducting R&D in any of the solicitation's 12 critical
technology areas, and commercializing their results, are eligible to
apply. Phase I awards typically range from $70,000 to $100,000 for a
six-month project period. Proposals may be submitted between Aug. 25 and

The Department of the Air Force is seeking sources for the Environmental

DOE invites applications for the Plasma Physics Junior Faculty Award
Program. This program seeks to identify exceptionally talented faculty
members early in their careers in plasma physics and to assist and
facilitate the development of their research programs. Proposed research
must focus on fundamental plasma physics issues, as opposed to
applications of plasma physics. Up to $555,000 in FY 2009 funding is
expected to be available for grants having a project period of up to
three years. Awards of up to $185,000 per year may be made. Applications
should be from tenure-track faculty investigators and submitted through

characterize diet-induced changes in inflammation and colon cancer
risks. Research is sought to identify and characterize: (1) diet-induced
changes in anti- and pro-inflammatory mediators that modulate colon
cancer risk; (2) genetic polymorphisms that modify the responses to
specific bioactive food components with regard to colon cancer
inhibition; and (3) the physiological effectiveness of dietary
components in terms of concentration, activity, duration of exposure,
degrees of stability, chemical forms, and receptor-binding affinity in

to develop models that forecast Medicare expenditures or provide insight
into key aspects of the forecasting of Medicare expenditures (e.g., cost
growth and population aging). Innovative projection models are vital for
understanding the likely consequences for the federal budget if the
Medicare program remains unchanged. Approximately $800,000 is expected
to be available annually over five years to support 2-3 awards having a

practical application in improving the health and well-being of older

both basic and translational research on these topics and strongly

The AAN Foundation and the ALS Association invite applications for their
Clinician-Scientist Development Award. This award is intended to support
research into drug discovery and development of therapies that will
effectively treat ALS and aims to recognize the importance of good
clinical research, encouraging young investigators in clinical studies.
The three-year award consists of an annual salary of $75,000, plus a
$5,000 institutional award. To be eligible, applicants must be
neurologists interested in an academic careers in clinical research,
hold an M.D., D.O. or equivalent clinical degree from an accredited
institution, and be licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. Applicants
also must have completed residency training but be less than seven years

New F&A Schedule (Pending Federal approval)
Effective April 1, 2008, all newly submitted proposals must include the
correct F&A rate(s) for the appropriate year(s), including multi-year
proposals. The Clemson F&A agreement, effective March 5, 2007, includes
an increase of one-half percent each year for the next two years for
On-campus Organized Research. The negotiated rate for FY 07/08 is 47.5%,
FY 08/09 is 48%, and FY 09/10 is 48.5%. The 48.5% rate should be used
for fiscal years after FY10 until we have a new rate agreement.
