Subject: Total Eclipse over Clemson
Greetings!
My mother lives in a seniors community in Gainesville, Georgia. On her behalf, I am seeking the optimum location within the band of totality for observing the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.
I see on the web that the Clemson Department of Physics and Astronomy (PandA) has an “Eclipse over Clemson” webpage and is planning viewing opportunities on campus. I checked the South Carolina Botanical Garden (SCBG) calendar and saw no events planned for that day. I also did not see a Clemson event on consolidating web sites such as http://nationaleclipse.com/events.html.
If you combine resources, the total solar eclipse could represent an outstanding education and community outreach opportunity for Clemson's SCBG and PandA. Specifically, these resources include:
*
Programming provided by PandA that is targeted to multiple age and interest levels.
*
The garden’s large, open expanses that provide good visibility of the sky in a very attractive setting.
*
Outdoor areas where shade shelters and chairs could be set up to provide rest and to protect visitors from the hot, pre-eclipse August sun.
*
Onsite air conditioned buildings to protect sensitive visitors such as seniors from overheating.
*
Support facilities such as restrooms and drinking fountains that are available at the SCBG. Depending on anticipated crowd size, these could be augmented with portable facilities.
*
The Bob Campbell Geology Museum’s gift shop, perhaps with an outdoor annex, where mandatory eclipse glasses could be purchased along with the museum’s normal merchandise and any event-specific items.
*
Very important: The SCBG’s permanent attractions, which could be enjoyed by visitors before and after the totality phase and would ensure a high-quality experience even if (heaven forbid!) dense clouds diminished the effects of the total eclipse.
*
Parking lots for visitors that can accommodate personal vehicles and buses from schools, churches, and senior centers.
A prominent “Group RSVP for Eclipse” link on the SCBG’s home page could help you anticipate the likely number of visitors for the event.
Please let me know if the SCBG is planning to host an “Eclipse over Clemson” experience, and I will send that information to the events coordinator at my mother’s community. (I will not be joining you. I already have my totality viewing site scoped out, south of the Moose headquarters complex in Grand Teton National Park.)
Yours in science,
