Janet,

Thanks for your help. There are four changes now. One more coming later. I'm
posting
this to panda-webmaster in the hope that this is archived, though maybe it
isn't.

Requested changes to web site, pertaining to information for prospective
grad students.
>From M. Daw for the Grad Admissions Committee, 5 Oct 2010.

Four changes.

**************************************************
first change

on the page "Information for Prospective Students"
(
http://www.clemson.edu/ces/departments/physics-astro/graduate/prospective.html
)

The paragraph which now begins "There are no specific course requirements
for the Doctor of Philosophy..."

should be replaced by these two paragraphs:

"Normally, students are accepted directly into the PhD program. The ultimate
goal is to carry out and publish independent scientific work in a chosen
research field. Coursework required for the PhD includes 18 credit hours of
the core curriculum consisting of PHYS 815, 821, 841, 842, 951, 952 (or
their equivalents), and 12 credit hours of elective 800–900-level physics,
astronomy or other graduate level courses (excluding PHYS 891/991), which
must be approved by the student’s advisory committee. PHYS/ASTR 875 courses
may be used to satisfy this requirement with approval by the faculty. The
purpose of these electives is to provide a well-rounded physics education
and additional coursework necessary for the student’s research area.

"Unless they receive a deferral from the Department faculty, students must
take the written PhD qualifying examination on topics from the core
curriculum no later than their third semester. Students are offered two
opportunities to pass the exam, which is typically offered twice annually.
After passing the written PhD qualifying examination, students shall have
selected a research area and faculty advisor and prepare for the oral PhD
qualifying examination in which they present and defend their planned
dissertation topic and research program. This oral examination must be
completed within 12 months after passing the written examination. At least
three weeks prior to the graduation at which the candidate expects to
receive the PhD degree, a final oral examination on the dissertation must be
successfully completed."

*************************************************
second change

Somewhere on the same page (Info for Prospective Students) we should add a
link to the official 2010 Graduate School Announcements. (unfortunately,
it's a big pdf file w/o bookmarks. P&A is at the end.)

**************************************************
third change

Also, the link to our course offerings should be updated. These are on the
same page (Info for Prospective Students),
in the section titled "Physics and Astronomy Graduate Courses"). They
currently point to the 2005 catalog.
[Actually, I see that now this also points to a pdf file, which contains
departments other than ours. Messy, but
seems to be the only convenient way to stay up-to-date.

So the 2010 courses of instruction are here:
http://www.registrar.clemson.edu/publicat/catalog/2010_GC/coi/
Astronomy is in the first (A-BIOCH) and physics in the last (ME 891-WS).

**************************************************
fourth change

This is on the same page (Info for Prospective Students) in the section
called
"Research Opportunities". Please add a bullet to the list for
Foundations of Physics.
Right now we don't have a link to connect to it, but that will come soon. In
the meantime,
we would like to have it on the list. We're getting inquiries.
