Quote of the Week: "In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure." -Bill Cosby

Fun Fact of the Week: Salaries for business grads are up 7.9% in 2013!!

These five areas of talent and character that are at the heart of what McKinsey and Co. seek in job candidates:

  1. Personal impact
People skills more than matter, they are essential. Without them, great ideas languish, lacking internal support and momentum. Our teams build relationships with clients quickly and become trusted advisers by inspiring broad support inside the client organization. When conflicting points of view arise-and they always do-using strong communication skills and effectively working with colleagues and clients inside the team room helps to overcome temporary obstacles.

  1. Entrepreneurial drive
We want McKinsey to always remain a place where entrepreneurs-who are innovative by nature, and always searching for ways to create new approaches, products services, and technologies-can find a home and feel at home. It's a value that distinguishes us.
So we look for people with the potential to become entrepreneurs within McKinsey-building new service lines, pioneering new geographies, innovating aspects of our firm.
Many of our internal entrepreneurs eventually apply their experience and the learning they gain to new ventures of their own.

  1. Problem-solving skills
These skills are absolutely critical. McKinsey is brought in to help our clients solve their toughest and most urgent challenges. Are you someone who can think both conceptually and practically? Do people say that you think differently about things? Do you like to create a challenging problem? Then we should talk.

  1. An orientation around achievement
To help our clients achieve great things we look for people with a track record of achieving great things themselves. We value the drive and fortitude to get things done and know it translates into client impact and the continual innovation of our institution.

  1. Leadership abilities
Leadership-the ability to take people forward and act as a catalyst for productive teamwork-is essential and common to those who succeed here. But we recognize that different people lead in different ways; we appreciate the diversity of gifts that make some people capable of inspiring others to rally behind them. That's how we help create positive change within client organizations-and our own. Some say we are a leadership factory based on the CEOs, entrepreneurs, politicians, and social-change agents we develop.

New Professional Development Programs for Grad Students Announced

Professional development for graduate students is the focus of a joint effort by the Graduate School, Graduate Student Government and the Michelin Career Center.

"Graduate students are so busy, and so inundated with information, that they may not be aware of the professional development resources the University offers them," said Kristen Walker, assistant director of graduate programs, assessment and off-ampus internships at the Center for Career & Professional Development's Michelin Career Center.

New this semester is Versatile PhD<http://career.clemson.edu/michelin_career_center/graduate_students/versatile_PhD/>, a resource for graduate students interested in careers outside of academia. The site hosts stories of real-life career paths, discussion forums, and an array of other resources for those who might want to put their advanced degrees to work in industry, non-profits or other non-academic settings.

There are numerous seminars and workshops produced especially for graduate students, both on the main campus and in Greenville. Click here for a complete list of this semester's offerings. They are all free of charge; some require pre-registration.

"Our first big workshops is the Presidential Management Fellows Program Informational Workshop on September 3," noted Walker. (click here<http://career.clemson.edu/events/event_rsvp/grad_pmf_program_rsvp.php> for details). The PMF program matches outstanding graduate students with exciting opportunities in federal government. The program, considered a leadership training ground, help jump-start careers, provides challenging assignments with full pay and benefits, and is an invaluable networking resource.

"Lots of grad students have no idea that the Michelin Career Center has literally dozens of resources for us," says Hamilton Allen, vice president of the Graduate Student Government. "They have academic salary surveys, H1-B job directories, subscriptions to all kinds of job boards, in-person counseling, mock job interviews so you can practice, and so many others."

For a comprehensive list of the Michelin Career Center's resources for graduate students, visit http://career.clemson.edu/michelin_career_center/graduate_students/.
