The Institute of Applied Ecology anticipates the availability of funding to support a graduate student who will serve as the Entrepreneurial Lead (EL) for the Intelligent River commercialization program. The EL will lead an investigation into the commercialization landscape surrounding the Intelligent River suite of technologies. In addition to possessing a relevant academic background, the EL must be capable and have the will to support the transition of these technologies, should the project be selected for additional commercialization funding. More information about the Intelligent River program is available at the following link: http://www.clemson.edu/public/psatv/env/intelligent-river-overview.html
Graduate students interested in this opportunity should contact Dr. Hallstrom ASAP at jasonoh at cs.clemson.edu<mailto:jasonoh at cs.clemson.edu>.

Costa Rica Trip Information:
Tamarindo is a community of about 3,000 permanent residents-the majority being expatriates-located in Guanacaste, on the Northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Although not formally incorporated, the community provides the bulk of the revenue for its assigned municipality, Santa Cruz, located about an hour's drive from the coast. The 'town' is under significant pressure from tourism development. The lack of formal superstructure creates barriers to improvement. Hotels and housing projects have developed without sufficient infrastructure. Community members have expressed an interest in developing long-term efforts to better support the circumstances of the residents, while improving their tourism product. Without a clear view of issues surrounding the community, these barriers to improvement remain a dominant force.
As a continued effort resulting from a long-term study, a group of Clemson faculty, staff, and students are interested in clarifying issues for the community. This work provides mutual benefits for all participants. Students and faculty gain a perspective of a unique community abounding with commonplace challenges, while the community benefits from research and instructional efforts from the university.
Working with a local language school- WAYRA (an internationally accredited institution)-students will stay with host families in a nearby village (Villareal). Students are required to attend 4 hours of Spanish immersion class per day during the first business week the 10 day program. During that period, they will conduct loose-based interviews with their respective host families, visitors, and local businesses. After gathering sufficient data, the students will use a guided evaluation program. This project will introduce them to complex systems theory. Elements examined include; healthcare, environmental challenges, and the economic well-being of the local residents. A local webhosting organization has agreed to host a resulting interactive model online, in order to gain perspective from three key population; local merchants (typically expatriates), Ticos (the indigenous population) , and visitors to the community. This program is a unique opportunity to implement participatory planning from both internal and external perspectives. In addition, graduate student participants will provide classroom instruction (45 to 60 minutes each) for local entrepreneurs, during two evening seminars at the school. They are required to develop a small business curriculum, based on their areas of expertise, that will provide a significant benefit to local operators.
The cost will be Roughly $400 plus whatever your airline ticket cost. This includes 10-days room and board and 5 days of Spanish emersion classes. The trip also includes 6 hours of business instruction. Dates are October 28-November 5.
