Mr. T. Boone Pickens Speaks on Leadership- April 18
Don't miss this great opportunity to hear T. Boone Pickens speak on Thursday, April 18 from 2:00-3:15pm at the Clemson Main Campus in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts.
T. Boone Pickens Bio
T. Boone Pickens has never felt comfortable running back in the pack. More importantly, he realized early in his career that merely wanting to be out front is not enough.
One of the reasons that he, as an "upstart" independent oil producer in the early 1980s, took on Big Oil and the influential Business Roundtable was that he determined the sector lacked the strong leadership needed to forge an inevitable industry restructuring. It was through his leadership that Mesa Petroleum grew to be one of the largest independent oil and natural gas producers in the country and his current companies operating under the Mesa name remain industry leaders. That leadership frequently meant giving young, aggressive employees with yet unproven track records opportunities to take on Herculean tasks.
Probably his most-often quoted thought on leadership, first shared in the 1980s, holds closely to his personal track record: "Be willing to make decisions. That's the most important quality in a good leader. Don't fall victim to what I call the ready-aim-aim-aim-aim syndrome. You must be willing to fire."
Pickens grew from humble beginnings in Depression-era Holdenville, Okla., to be one of the nation's most successful oil and gas executives and entrepreneurs. Coined the "Oracle of Oil," he has been uncannily accurate in predicting oil and gas prices and established a successful energy-oriented investment fund called BP Capital. Pickens is also a generous philanthropist who has donated nearly $1 billion to charity.
Study Abroad Option for Fall 2013
MBA 899 - International Business Law will be offered this fall. Students will travel to London, Paris and Brussels during Fall Break. Please check out the link to the program webpage for additional information or contact Professor Judson Jahn at judsonj at clemson.edu:http://people.clemson.edu/~judsonj/fallbreak.html
New Online Electives for Summer
The following three courses will be offered ONLINE this summer and can count as electives towards your MBA Program. Because the PADM courses (PADM 822, Section 400 and PADM 878, Section 400) are not coded as MBA, you will need to add your name to the PADM request log for the course and their department will add you in. You will be able to add yourself into the MBA coded course (MBA 899, Section 402).
MBA 899-Section 402: Taxation of Business Decisions
Taxation of Business Decisions 3(3,0) Discusses the importance of taxation in business decision making.
Emphasizes the interrelationship of taxes, the choice of business form, and various business transactions; exposes students to the breadth of business decisions which are affected by the Federal income tax. The course is designed for non-accounting students with little or no background in tax.
PADM 822 section 400 - Public Policy Process
Public Policy Process - The policy process consists of several major models of policymaking that frame how ideas become adopted legislation. Students examine how the theory stems from real life examples and learn to evaluate policy effectiveness.
PADM 878 section 400 - Regional Economic Development
Regional Economic Development - This class is based on literature developed in the recent past on issues of sustainability and resilience in the highly disruptive environment of today's knowledge-based economy. Students read the seminal journal articles that deal with spillover effects and externalities from public good that change the incentives for the location of industrial production. A core issue examined is the nature of the American federalist system where the cost of the provision of public goods is mostly born by individual states, but their benefits are diffused regionally, nationally, and in some cases globally. The policies examined focus on the issues of inter and intra state competition, when such a competition surpasses a socially optimal level, and the tools public administrators use to mitigate the effects.
Commerce Club Toastmasters Group
The new Club within in a Club we formed is in conjunction with Toastmasters International. We have a Toastmasters group for "downtown" Young Executives that meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 6 PM in the Commerce Club. The one time new Member fee is $20 for the group, monthly toastmaster fees are $6, and there is a $5 nonmember payment to the Commerce Club per visit. The meetings include a complimentary drink. The mission of the Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
For information about Toastmasters, email Dylan Petrick at dylan.petrick at ourclub.com<mailto:dylan.petrick at ourclub.com>
