Cross, April 9-10, 2011
To: kevja at clemson.edu
Dear Professor James:
As part of the upcoming AMS 2011 Spring Eastern Sectional Meeting, there
will be a Special Session on Undergraduate Research, jointly organized by
students and faculty. The purpose of this session will be for undergraduates
to present original mathematical research and results, whether from REUs,
thesis work, or other independent research projects. Undergraduates and
recent graduates are welcome to submit abstracts, though preference will be
given to current undergraduates and to new results obtained through
undergraduate research. There will also be a panel discussion on guiding
undergraduate research; faculty and students interested in participating
should contact one of the organizers.
In addition to the Session on Undergraduate Research, there are over 20
other sessions, and invited addresses by Vitaly Bergelson (Ohio State
University), Kenneth M. Golden (University of Utah), Walter D. Neumann
(Columbia University: What does a complex surface really look like?), and
Natasa Sesum (University of Pennsylvania). For more information, see the
conference homepage at:
http://www.ams.org/meetings/sectional/2177_program.html
or the Special Session website at:
http://www.williams.edu/Mathematics/sjmiller/public_html/undergrad/
Presenting at a meeting like this is a great opportunity to gain
presentation skills, meet other mathematicians, and see what topics and
questions are being explored in current research! Each talk should be 20
minutes long; presenters will have access to a whiteboard or projector. The
conference is April 9-10, 2011, at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester,
MA. We invite undergraduates interested in presenting to submit an abstract
(in pdf form) to undergradsession AT gmail.com. Please include the following
information (we strongly urge you to show your write-up to a faculty member
before submitting):
* Page 1:
* 1. Your name: (Affiliation, email and status)
2. Faculty Advisor: (Name, affiliation and email)
3. Was this work done under the auspices of an REU, other summer
research, independent study or thesis?
4. If joint work, please list co-workers, their affiliation and
whether faculty or student:
5. Abstract: (at most half a page)*
Page 2: *Description (of less than one page). Be sure to indicate
whether you will be presenting new results etc.
The deadline for abstract submission is December 21, 2010. A committee of
faculty and students will read the submissions and make decisions
accordingly.
Unfortunately the AMS is unable to provide funding for transportation to and
from the conference.
