Dear Professor James:

The purpose of this correspondence is to ask for your assistance in
identifying students who may be good candidates to apply for the 2009
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program (MSRI-UP,
www.msri.org/up). You have written letters of recommendation for MSRI-UP
applicants in previous years so we thought that you'd be in a good position
to help us get the word out about the 2009 program.

The MSRI-UP, funded by the NSA and the NSF REU program, is now in its 3rd
year. MSRI-UP is a comprehensive program for undergraduates whose primary
aim is to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups in
mathematics graduate programs. MSRI-UP includes summer research
opportunities, mentoring, workshops on the graduate school application
process, and follow-up support.

The MSRI-UP:
* Trains undergraduates in mathematical research through a six-week summer
program at MSRI in Berkeley, CA.
* Provides participating students opportunities to present their research at
national conferences in the year following the summer program.
* Introduces participating students to a network of mentors through national
societies known for their mentoring activities and professional support for
students.
* Guides students in the process of applying to graduate programs and
fellowships.

Details of the 2009 summer program:
* Program dates: June 15 - July 24.
* Application review will begin March 2, 2009 so students are encouraged to
get their applications in by that date.
* Eighteen students will participate in research on Coding Theory led by
John B. Little from the College of the Holy Cross; Dr. Little will be
assisted by a post-doc and two graduate student assistants
* The prerequisites for the 2009 program are a solid course in linear
algebra and a course where a student develops skill in reading and
constructing proofs
* Students who will finish their sophomore or junior year in 2009 are
preferred. African American, Latino and Native American students are
especially sought
* Applications are to be submitted online at www.msri.org/up/intropage
* Each student will receive room and board, a $3,000 summer stipend,
transportation to and from Berkeley, and funding to attend a national
conference
