Dear REU Director:

 

Each year you work with some of the brightest math majors in the country.  Many of your students from the summers of 2006 and 2007 are probably waiting to hear from the graduate school of their choice.  I am sending this to you so that you may help me in adding one more possibility to their list of options, namely to earn a $30,000 stipend for each of two years as an NSF GK-12 Fellow at East Tennessee State University (ETSU), and engaging in work that will truly make a difference in their lives as well as in those of others.  Students will

 

*         Work towards an MS degree in Mathematics, Chemistry, or Biology; in Math, many students' theses at ETSU lead to a refereed publication;

*         Earn a yearly $30,000 stipend, with tuition fully covered;

*         Bring their research into the elementary school classroom, thus inspiring children to consider careers in STEM fields;

*         Work with school teachers to build a new K-5 curriculum that is integrated and science based.

 

Please bring the attached flyers to the attention of appropriate students.  The following *kinds* of students might be most attracted to this opportunity:  

(i)                   Those who are still trying to decide whether or not to enter research careers, 

(ii)                 Those who would love to strengthen their applications to doctoral programs even more,  

(iii)                Those who want to make a difference in the nation's K-12 infrastructure as they launch a research career.
