Dear Kevin James:
As a site coordinator for the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, you may be interested in sharing the following opportunity with your student-researchers.
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society would like to extend a special invitation to REU student-researchers to join leaders in science and engineering from North America and abroad at the 2005 Sigma Xi Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference in Seattle, Washington on November 4 and 5.
PRESENT RESEARCH: The Conference features a poster competition judged by Sigma Xi members, who are leading researchers in their fields. All fields of science and engineering will be represented, with a special category for interdisciplinary presentations. Outstanding research poster presentations will receive recognition to include monetary awards. Advanced graduate students and doctoral candidates are invited to share their research through oral presentations.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT: Workshops, networking and recruitment opportunities focus on developing a successful career in research.
ATTEND TALKS: Celebrated researchers deliver powerful lectures and engage in panel discussions on research and science and society.
Featured speakers at the 2005 Conference include:
- SYLVIA EARLE, celebrated oceanographer and Time magazine's first "hero for the planet"
- BJARNE STROUSTRUP, inventor of C++ programming language
- IRA FLATOW, host of National Public Radio's Talk of The Nation: Science Friday®
- DAVID QUAMMEN, National Magazine Award-winning science and nature writer
- THOMAS SPENCER, reproductive endocrinologist at the Center for Animal Biotechnology and Genomics, Texas A&M University
Additional information about the conference can be found at the following web link:
http://www.sigmaxi.org/meetings/annual/index.shtml
Online registration for students who wish to present their research, non-presenting students, faculty/research advisors and family members will be available August 1, 2005 at the web link above.
I hope you will share this opportunity with your REU students and other student-researchers who might be interested.
Regards,
Kevin Bowen
