ErgOlympics
________________________________
The HFES Student Chapter hosted ErgOlympics — a series of interactive, hands-on challenges that highlight key concepts in human factors and ergonomics. The ErgOlympics featured four interactive stations: Simon Memory Task, Weighted Arm Toss, Right Tool Cutout, and Stroop Test. Through these activities, students gained a deeper appreciation for how human capabilities and limitations influence design, safety, and performance in real-world settings.

Jennifer Zamudio Concludes Year-Long Mentorship Program for Aspiring Researchers
________________________________
Over the last year, Jennifer Zamudio co-led the Rackham Aspiring Fellows program, under the direction of Outreach Coordinator, Richard Nunn. This year-long initiative provided undergraduate students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with mentored research experiences and professional development with U-M faculty mentors. The program culminated in a showcase of fellows' research projects, reflecting months of collaboration with faculty and graduate mentors across the University of Michigan. Zamudio, a former participant in similar research pipeline programs herself, described leading the program as the highlight of her academic career: "Being able to pay it forward and introduce our fellows to the value of research has been incredibly meaningful.”

IOE Hosts the WISE (Women in Science & Engineering) Camp
________________________________
The ENCHANT camp (ErgoNomiCs and Human-Automation iNteracTion) was held on June 17, 2025, which featured four stations where the campers can see and interact with the latest robotic/automated technology and use human factors principles during activities. The day started with an introduction to human factors and ergonomics and a simulated candy factory in which the campers fulfilled orders and discovered methods to improve communication, work methods, quality and productivity. The campers also had the opportunity to tour four Robotics Department laboratories. The camp is supported by the:
* University of Michigan Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Student Chapter
* Prof. Jessie Yang's CAREER grant through the NSF Human-Centered Computing (HCC) program
* Prof. Leia Stirling's grants through the NSF Mind, Machine, and Motor Nexus (M3X) program, and
* Dr. Sheryl Ulin's Outreach grant, one component of the Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering, a NIOSH sponsored Education and Research Center.
All the ENCHANT camp activities received high evaluation ratings from the campers. This is the fourth year we sponsored a day of activities for the WISE day camp at the University of Michigan and we look forward to participating again next year!

C4E Student Shreyas Bhat Nominated For Best Student Paper Award at IEEE Conference
________________________________
C4E PhD student Shreyas Bhat, with his faculty advisor Dr. X. Jessie Yang, were one of 3 nominees for the Best Student Paper Award at the the 5th IEEE International Conference on Human-Machine Systems (ICHMS 2025). The paper is titled "Effects of Learning State Dependence of Reward Weights on Trust and Team Performance in a Human-Robot Sequential Decision-Making Task."
Below is a short abstract:
* We evaluate two interaction strategies for a robot in a sequential decision-making task: one which uses a state-dependent reward function and the other that uses a state-independent (constant) reward function. Towards this, we present a study done on Amazon Mechanical Turk to learn the state-dependent reward function. We show that under certain conditions, using this state-dependent reward function may lead to better trust and team performance.

________________________________
C4E Alumna Dr. Cristina D. Pomales is this year's honoree of the Annual Wilbert Steffy Lectureship. Dr. Cristina D. Pomales is Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM). On April 15 2025, she presented the Steffy lecture "A Journey Through Transformation and Leadership in Academia," in which she shared her personal life journey as U-M IOE and C4E alumna to becoming Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez.
About Dr. Cristina D. Pomales
Dr. Cristina Pomales was born and raised in Puerto Rico and received undergraduate education at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (UPRM). She earned her PhD in IOE in 2006, focusing on Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE), working in Cognitive and Aesthetic HFE with Professor Yili Liu as advisor. Upon graduation, she returned to UPRM as faculty, where she started her academic and leadership journey that required continuously redefining and positioning herself to effect institutional transformation.

C4E Alumnus Dr. Clark Dickerson Gave Invited Lecture at IOE on "The Burdens and Blessings of Being Upright - On the Costs and Benefits of Extraordinary Human Shoulder Function"
________________________________
C4E Alumnus Dr. Clark Dickerson is a Professor of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. On April 10 2025 he presented an invited IOE seminar that summarizes investigations into primary shoulder function and dysfunction and related applications in work, sport, and daily life. His seminar illustrates that human shoulders are staggeringly unique amongst Earth species, with both amazing capabilities including complex tool manipulation and high-speed accurate throwing, and vulnerabilities to many aspects of modern life.
About Dr. Clark Dickerson
Clark Dickerson (PhD) is a Professor of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo, where he has been since 2005. He earned his BSME at Alfred University, his MS in bioengineering from Clemson University, and his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan with C4E faculty Prof. Don Chaffin and Prof. Richard Hughes as Co-Chairs of his PhD dissertation. His current research interests focuses on the development and experimental evaluation of computational shoulder models, digital ergonomics, age and disease-related shoulder disorder prevention, assessment, and mitigation, in vitro tissue mechanical characterization, and comparative and developmental shoulder mechanics. Dr. Dickerson is an author of over 150 peer-reviewed research articles and over 300 conference and invited talks. He is a past-president of Canadian Society for Biomechanics and past-chairperson of the Board of the International Shoulder Group (a technical group of the International Society of Biomechanics). He also recently completed a 10-year term as the Canada Research Chair in Shoulder Mechanics.

An Undergrad Minor in Human Factors Engineering (HFE)
________________________________
To further enhance the educational impact of Human Factors Engineering (HFE), Center for Ergonomics (C4E), and Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE), we have developed an Undergraduate Minor in Human Factors Engineering (HFE) offered and administered by the IOE Department. We are pleased to announce that this minor has received all the necessary approvals and officially started in January 2025 (Winter 2025). This minor is open to all U-M College of Engineering undergraduate students in any major except IOE, because IOE students can take the HFE courses as part of their IOE major requirements. Students from multiple majors such as aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics have started to declare this minor. We are currently exploring possibilities to open this HFE minor to other Colleges and Schools at U-M.
