IISE Transactions in Healthcare Systems Engineering Associate Editor Service Award

The IISE Transactions in Healthcare Systems Engineering journal is pleased to announce the establishment of the Associate Editor Service Award. This prestigious recognition honors the exceptional contributions and dedication of our associate editors, who play a crucial role in maintaining the high standards of our publication.

The award represents our ongoing commitment to recognizing the vital role our editors play in advancing the field of healthcare systems engineering. Starting in 2024, this award will be presented annually, aiming to inspire and motivate our editorial board to continue their exceptional work in shaping the future of our discipline.

Purpose and Eligibility
The primary goal of this award is to acknowledge the outstanding work of associate editors who have demonstrated exemplary service to the journal. To be eligible, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  1. Have served on the editorial board for a minimum of 12 months.
  2. Be currently active as an associate editor at the time of nomination.
  3. Not have received this award in the previous year.
These criteria ensure that nominees have had sufficient time to make a meaningful impact on the journal's operations and quality.

Award Frequency and Limitations
The Associate Editor Service Award will be presented annually to highlight excellence in editorial service. To maintain the prestige of this honor, we will limit the award to one recipient per year, ensuring that it reflects truly outstanding performance.

Eligibility for Future Awards
Previous award recipients can be considered again after a one-year break. There is no limit to how many times an individual can receive the award, encouraging ongoing contributions to the journal's success.

Selection Process
The selection process for the Associate Editor Service Award involves multiple stages to ensure fairness and transparency:

  1. Nomination Phase:

  * By December 1st each year, department editors can nominate associate editors from their areas for consideration.
  *   Self-nominations are warmly welcomed!
  * Nominations should include a detailed statement (up to 1000 words) highlighting the nominee’s contributions and qualifications. The statement must address how the nominee meets the eligibility criteria and may include:

     * The number of papers they’ve handled.
     *   Their average review times.
     * Feedback from authors and reviewers about the quality of their input.
     * Specific examples where their editorial guidance significantly improved a manuscript or elevated the journal’s standards.

  * Nominations should be sent to the Chair of the Associate Editor Service Award Selection Committee, who will be named by the EIC each year.

  1. Award Committee Formation:
Each year, the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) will appoint a Department Editor (DE) to lead the award process. The DE will form a selection committee that includes:

  * At least two individuals who are editorial board members,
  * The previous year’s award winner.
Members of the previous year’s award committee are not eligible to serve on the award committee. This composition ensures a well-balanced evaluation from multiple perspectives within the academic community.

  1. Initial Screening:
The EIC and DE will review all nominations to confirm eligibility requirements are met. They will create a shortlist of nominees based on the nomination statements and relevant data on their performance.

  1. Detailed Evaluation by the Award Committee:
The committee will assess the shortlisted nominees, focusing on two key areas:
Service Workload: The volume of papers handled and the efficiency of managing the review process.
Review Quality: The thoroughness and impact of the editor’s guidance, with an emphasis on how it improved manuscript quality.
This evaluation will be based on the nominee’s performance over the past year.

  1. Award Committee Timeline:
By February 1st, the selection committee will convene to discuss the merits of each candidate and select the final awardee through a voting process.

  1. Approval and Notification:
Once the committee has selected a winner, the awardee will be presented to the EIC and department editors for final approval. The recipient will be notified and announced by Mach 1st.

Announcement of Awards
The award will be presented annually at the IISE Annual Conference, typically held in May, offering an opportunity to publicly recognize the awardee’s contributions to the journal and the field of healthcare systems engineering.
