The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks<https://msn.engineering.asu.edu/>, an integral part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering<https://engineering.asu.edu/> at Arizona State University (ASU)<https://www.asu.edu/>, is actively seeking qualified applicants for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions. We are inviting applications at the ranks of Assistant or Associate Professor, with expertise in "Robotics & Autonomous Systems, Cyber-manufacturing & Automation, or Generative AI& Physics-based Computing" with applications spanning various fields, including microelectronics, energy systems, healthcare, aerospace, and automotive industries. Connections to robotics, computer science, industrial engineering, and human systems engineering are strongly encouraged.
The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks is dedicated to advancing innovation in manufacturing science and engineering. It boasts a dynamic group of 18 faculty members, including six recipients of the NSF Career award, who collaborate across various research areas like process science, automation & robotics, smart manufacturing, material testing, data analytics, AI, and cybersecurity. The School's location in Phoenix offers close ties to Aerospace & Defense industry, Semiconductor/Microelectronics and National Laboratories, facilitating collaborative research. Notably, the School has a unique asset in that it offers Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in manufacturing engineering. The school is also building a state-of-the-art approximately 200,000-square-foot facility, further enhancing its leadership in manufacturing innovation.
We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.

We are specifically interested in candidates with research interests that encompass, but are not limited to, the following areas of focus:
Focus Area 1: Robotics & Autonomous Systems: Research topics include but are not limited to:
* Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality for hybrid human-robot integration
* Interaction learning for human-robot collaboration
* Novel sensing approaches for smart manufacturing
* Robotics and manufacturing in the industrial metaverse
* Robot dynamics and precision control, robot learning, task and motion planning
* Soft and flexible robotics
* Security in robotic operation in manufacturing
* Computational architecture for digital twins for robotic applications
* Robotic & autonomous systems for biomanufacturing and manufacturing in extreme environments
Focus Area 2: Cyber-manufacturing Systems and Industrial Automation: Research topics include but are not limited to:
* Human-AI partnership for next generation factories
* Digital Design & Manufacturing, Industry 4.0/5.0
* Realtime process monitoring and control, and Industrial Internet of Things
* Smart distributed sensors for factories
* Cyber-security in manufacturing
* AI/ML powered digital twins in automation, flexible and networked manufacturing
* Cloud computing applications in cyber-physical production systems and smart supply chains
Focus Area 3: Generative AI and Physics-based Computing: Research topics include but are not limited to:
* Neuro-symbolic AI, ontology engineering with applications in manufacturing systems and supply networks
* Manufacturing knowledge graphs, semantic interoperability in digital manufacturing systems
* Physics-Informed AI for manufacturing simulation and analysis
* Data-driven manufacturing planning, execution, and control
* Cognitive productions systems and digital/smart supply chains
Appointments may be at the Assistant or Associate rank commensurate with the candidate's experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2024. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks is currently the most involved in the interest of this research.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
* Earned doctorate in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline by the time of appointment
* Demonstrated research capability
* Commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate's rank
Desired Qualifications:
* Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching
* Demonstrated success in conducting research, including an established track record publishing in academic journals, presenting at conferences, invited talks, etc.
* Demonstrated success, appropriate to the candidate's rank, in mentoring, training, supervising, and graduating students for both academic and industrial careers
* Demonstrated success, appropriate to the candidate's rank, in navigating the funding landscape, with prior success attracting and maintaining an Independent research program

Application deadline is November 3, 2023. However, applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for a reserve pool. Applications in the reserve pool may then be reviewed in the order in which they were received until the position is filled. Candidates will be asked to create or use an existing Interfolio Dossier to submit the following:

* Curriculum Vitae
* Statement describing research interests (two pages maximum)
* Statement describing teaching interests and philosophy (two pages maximum)
* Contact information for three references
Applicants need to specify the focus area(s) they are applying to; if applicants believe they are well aligned for multiple focus areas, a clear rationale must be included.
