The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and The Polytechnic School (TPS) seek applicants for multiple open rank tenure-track or tenured Human Systems Engineering (HSE) faculty positions in the area of human and artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration. Scholarship within human-AI collaboration might be applied to medical human factors, defense, user experience, learning engineering, aviation, training and education, or another relevant area. The HSE program combines engineering and psychology to design systems consistent with human strengths and limitations to make technology that works for humans. HSE faculty currently have expertise in applied cognition, education, human-technology interaction, and more. The program is housed within The Polytechnic School, which is home to a diverse group of human-centered programs. Learn more at https://poly.engineering.asu.edu/. Ideal candidates will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the University achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship, and conducting use-inspired research. Numerous affiliated centers are available for collaboration and support, such as the Center for Innovation in Healthy and Resilient Aging, the Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency for homeland security, the Center for Human, Artificial Intelligence, and Robot Teaming (CHART) in the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and the new Learning Engineering Institute (LEI). Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses in their respective Fulton Engineering School, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.
This search is part of the ASU and state of Arizona New Economy Initiative (NEI), a bold effort to ensure that Arizona leads the new economy that will rely on engineering, computing and technology to drive sustainable growth, resilience and opportunities for all. NEI investments in the Fulton Schools of Engineering will grow our world class faculty to accelerate research outcomes and to broaden student access to our programs; support Science and Technology Centers to foster the growth of new economy Industries; and expand experiential learning and workforce training opportunities.
Appointments will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank commensurate with candidate experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2024. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Fulton Schools, the Polytechnic School is currently the most involved in the interest of this research.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in a Human Factors related discipline or a field closely related to the stated research and teaching focus of this position, by the time of appointment
- Evidence of excellence in research, as appropriate to rank
- Evidence of excellence in teaching, as appropriate to rank
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching
For associate and full professor candidates:
- Demonstrated record of securing external funding for research programs
- Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning
