Dear colleagues,

After a national search, Archis Ghate has accepted the Fluor Endowed Chair in Clemson University's Department of Industrial Engineering with an effective date of Sept. 16, 2023.
Endowed chair is the highest designation on Clemson's faculty. Faculty members who hold endowed chairs are exemplary scholars with leadership skills that enable them to expand the boundaries of traditional disciplines of study and to address important technical and societal challenges with funding from federal, state and industry partners.

Dr. Ghate is joining Clemson from the University of Washington, where he is a professor of industrial and systems engineering. His field of study is operations research, focusing on theory, models and algorithms for optimization under uncertainty. He uses mathematical methods to make difficult decisions in areas such as health care, transportation, energy, manufacturing and economics. Dr. Ghate is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and his honors include the Teaching Excellence Award from the Operations Research Division of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers. His students have won the George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award and the Seth Bonder Scholarship, both from INFORMS.

Dr. Ghate's expertise in operations research will be a tremendous asset to the industrial engineering department and the broader research community. His record of excellence in scholarship, teaching and student mentorship is a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication. I am thrilled Dr. Ghate is joining Clemson, and I invite you to join me in welcoming him to the University.

Sincerely,
