Academic Year 2022-2023 Newsletter

Greetings from the IME department! As we wrap up this academic year, we reflect on the progress and initiatives we have made. We have been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming ABET visit, which will take place in Fall 2023. Our faculty, staff, students, and industry partners have been working together to ensure that our programs meet the required standards and exceed expectations. The visit will be a significant milestone for us, and we look forward to seeking the help and support of our stakeholders during this crucial time.

We are excited to share the accomplishments of our faculty, who have received recognition for their outstanding research, teaching, and scholarly work with students. Our faculty members were awarded the Provost's Teacher-Scholar Award and received SPICE funds for Innovative Instruction and modernizing our labs. Their achievements reflect the dedication and expertise of our faculty and demonstrate our commitment to providing quality education to our students.
We are proud of our students who ranked first in the IISE technical paper competition at the regional conference held in San Luis Obispo, as well as those who received the "Best Casting Award at the "Cast In Steel 2023 competition". Their hard work and dedication have been an inspiration to us all, and we know that they will continue to excel in their future endeavors.

In addition to our achievements this year, we are also excited to share our new initiative to build a pathway from community colleges to our department. We recognize the importance of creating opportunities for students to pursue higher education, and we are committed to expanding access to our programs. We are currently in the planning stages and look forward to sharing more information about this initiative in the near future.

Over 70 IME students presented the rigorous findings of their projects and research in the Project Symposium & Showcase on April 28th. We want to acknowledge the invaluable support and guidance provided by the members of the Industry Advisory Council and their representatives. Their expertise and commitment have been instrumental in shaping our programs, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared for the workforce. We value their partnership and appreciate the time and effort they dedicate to collaborating with us. Their input is critical to the ongoing success of our department, and we look forward to continuing our fruitful collaboration in the future.

As we conclude this academic year, we extend our sincere appreciation to our faculty, staff, students, and alumni for their continued support and dedication to the IME department. We are proud of what we have accomplished this year, and we look forward to building on this success in the years to come.

Innovative Instruction

Dr Saeideh Fallah-Fini, in collaboration with Dr. Navid Nakhjiri from Aerospace Engineering Department, was awarded by MathWorks Academic Support to develop training modules explaining the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) framework and how MATLAB and Simulink can be used for developing MBSE diagrams and deliverables. Most existing MBSE tools focus on System Model Language (SysML) architecture and translate MBSE elements to such an environment. However, the focus of this project is on explaining how MATLAB and Simulink can be used as a standard way of describing MBSE diagrams. The developed set of modules can then be integrated into many of the existing design courses which already use MathWorks products. This well make it convenient and accessible for students to learn principles of MBSE.

Dr. Payam Parsa received a SPICE grant for "Increasing students' engagement in hybrid-Flip courses by incorporating collaborative learning practices based on real-world case studies". A three-phase project was started to infuse active and flipped learning methods into classes that focus on the topic of Supply Chain Management. The first two phases have been completed, and feedback from students has been positive. The third phase will focus on providing a real-world learning experience through in-class activities in both face-to-face and hybrid settings.

Dr. Ellips Masehian Ellips received a SPICE grant for Transforming the automation Instruction into a modern hands-on learning experience and integrating a material handling robotic arm, controller, touchscreen teach-pendant, and software" It aims to upgrade the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory by adding a PLC/HMI Trainer kit, enabling students to learn PLC programming and control through real-world automated systems. Dr. Masehian is adding a new material-handling robotic arm, controller, and software, all integrated into a movable cart for more flexibility in teaching and storage.

Research Spotlight

Dr. Mirzaei received the Air Force Summer Faulty Fellowship to develop a Robust Natural Language Processing for tactical aviation communications.  She also secured a gift from American Food Ingredients to support students' projects for developing a working prototype to tackle a real-life industry problem. Professor Mirzaei from IME and Dr. Pezhman Hassanpour from Mechanical Engineering lead a graduate and an undergraduate student in this project.

Collaboration with Industry

This year, the IME department received a generous donation from Niagara Water, which has allowed us to equip our automation lab with state-of-the-art equipment. We are grateful for their support and appreciate their commitment to investing in the education and training of future engineers. This donation will enhance our students' learning experience and help prepare them for successful careers in the industry. We are excited to see the positive impact this new equipment will have on our students and look forward to further collaborations with industry partners.

American Food Ingredients (AFI) has generously provided a gift to the IME department to sponsor a project that involves developing a working prototype to tackle a real industry problem. This project is a great opportunity for our students to apply their knowledge and skills to a practical application, while also addressing a pressing issue in the food industry. We are grateful to AFI for their support and look forward to showcasing the project in our future department newsletter.

End of year banquet of the IME department

At the end-of-the-year banquet for the IME department at Cal Poly Pomona, students, faculty, and industry advisory board members came together to network and recognize the achievements of the students in various areas. This year's banquet was particularly special as it included a new section in the program to acknowledge the exceptional support of one of the department's Industry Advisory Council members, Joe Fournel. Joe has been a dedicated supporter of our students, providing senior project opportunities and guidance throughout the process. He also serves as an adjunct lecturer, teaching Master level courses to our Engineering Management students, appearing as a guest speaker in our classrooms, attending senior project presentations, and never missing an Industry Advisory Council meeting. In addition to recognizing Joe, the event also acknowledged student club members and awarded several scholarships to highly achieved students. The event was a great success and served as a reminder of the sense of community and achievement within the IME department.

Congrats to this year's valedictorian for Industrial Engineering, Fenicia Halim (right), and to this year's banner carrier for Manufacturing Engineering, Santiago Meija (left). It's no easy feat to have the highest GPA for your program, and it's even harder to have the highest GPA among the Class of 2023.

Student Success

IISE Outstanding Capstone Senior Project Finalist

The IME department continues its run of competitive showings by placing first in the 2023 IISE Western Region conference. The department has historically been a top three contender in the western region and will compete on an international stage later this month. "We're excited and proud to represent Cal Poly Pomona," says Andrea Doan, industrial and manufacturing engineering student. "We wouldn't be here without the support of our professors."

The Cast In Steel Annual Competition

Bronco Men Are Back-To-Back CCAA Champions!

For the second consecutive season, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team captured the CCAA Track and Field championship with a meet-record 311 points this weekend at Mangrum Track and Field Complex in San Marcos.
