Spring 2023 ISE Newsletter
*A Message from the Chair*
Dr. Yasser Dessouky
Similar to other institutions, San José State University has enjoyed the
resurgence and vibrance of having students back in person. The campus is
full of energy with student engagement across various campus activities.
For example, in this newsletter you will read about the newly created lab
Behavior, Accessibility, and Technology (BAT) with Dr. Gaojian Huang as lab
director. The lab supports many students with funded research projects.
Our faculty and students continue to receive recognitions for their
efforts. For example, Dr. Anil Kumar received the 2022 College of
Engineering faculty award for excellence in service and Kimberly Martinez
won the 2022 Donald Beall Student award for engineering accomplishment. The
Industrial and Systems Engineering department was honored to host the Li
family for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Vy and Tim Li named lab on
October 13, 2022. Our enrollment continues to grow as the department adds
new programs to our curriculum such as the new concentration in User
Experience for the MS Human Factors and Ergonomics degree. Our senior
design projects continue to be sponsored by a variety of industries that
reflect the wide range of our students’ employers such as Lockheed Martin,
Kaiser, Facebook (Meta), etc. I am also proud to mention that The Charles
W. Davidson College of Engineering *ranks 3 nationally* in US World News
rankings among public engineering programs offering bachelor’s and master’s
degrees, excluding service academies. These are few of the many stories
below and linked, and we invite you to read our ISE newsletter to find out
some of the exciting activities the department is engaging in to support
our faculty, students, alumni, and the community in general.
**Note that several story extensions can be reached by clicking the links
indicated, which will take you to various web pages on the Department’s
website. Return to the newsletter to continue by going back to your email
view, or click now at the very top of this mailing to open the newsletter
in a new tab on your browser. Then return to that tab to continue reading.*
*The Vy and Timothy Li Laboratory for Industrial and Systems Engineering*
*The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony *
As announced in the last ISE Department Newsletter, the Department was
honored to establish its first named lab, the Vy and Timothy Li Laboratory
in recognition of their generous gift to the Department. In celebration of
the gift, the College hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the doors of the
lab on October 13th, 2022. The Li’s and their 4 children attended, as well
as many faculty, students, and guests.
The Li’s and Dr. Freund conduct the ribbon cutting ceremony with an extra
large pair of scissors that the College has on hand, just for such
occasions.
The Li’s, who are both 2003 BSISE alums, stated that their naming gift was
in honor of Dr. Freund for his “decades of service to the College of
Engineering.”
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, the Li
children and guests enjoyed a tour of the lab, and particularly focused on
the new Omron Hornet robot with its integrated vision system.

According to Dr. Gaojian Huang, Director, the mission of the Behavior,
Accessibility, and Technology (BAT) Lab is to develop next-generation
human-machine systems that can assist and support humans with technology in
a wide range of application domains and to enhance human performance and
optimize human well-being. Collaborators and Sponsors of the lab include
the National Science Foundation (NSF), Honda Research Institute USA, U.S.
Department of Transportation, Mineta Transportation Institute, SJSU
Research Foundation, and Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering. Our
areas of research:
-
Human-automation interaction
-
Automated driving
-
Aging and technology
-
Human-machine interface

Human behavior modeling
2022-2023 Senior Design Sponsors
Our senior design projects continue to be a highlight of our students’
learning experiences. While the COVID pandemic created challenges, our
sponsors came through for us. We are deeply grateful to all of the recent
sponsors listed below.

Featured Sr. Design Project Sponsor
Vinh Nguyen—Chris Nicholson—Joseph Guzman—Ali Shihab
The Department is pleased to welcome Albertsons as a Senior Design Project
host. A 4 member student team has been working on their project at the
Albertsons warehouse in Tracy, CA since last fall. The project is focused
on reconfiguring Albertsons warehouse yogurt section by improving their
slotting method. As their study has progressed, the team sees an
opportunity to reduce a picker's pallet build time by recommending a better
picking pattern and has identified other potential improvements as well.

New Concentration in MS Human Factors
User Experience (UX)
The purpose of the UX concentration is to provide students with competency
in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and UX through their course work and
culminating project and to add a recognizable competency credential in UX
on the MSHFE degree certificate.
See more about the User Experience MS Degree here

MS graduate students in the field of HFE pursue competency in three
different areas of knowledge:
1.
Human mental and physical capabilities and limitations
2.
Measurement of human performance within hardware / software solutions
3.
Design for usability of new products, systems and services

Mr. Chris Constantin
Chris is a 1995 graduate of the ISE BS program, and has pursued a career in
city management. He has demonstrated a deep commitment to public service
and brought a unique perspective in the application of systems engineering
principles to local government organizations. He serves on the ISE
Department Advisory Committee because he wants to ensure that the program
has greater impact to areas not normally associated with Industrial
Engineering – government operations and education.
