Call for 2022 J. Steinhardt Prize Nominations

The J. Steinhardt Prize is sponsored by the CNA Corporation. The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to Military Operations Research and is awarded for life work rather than for any particular contribution. The selection Committee is composed of previous award winners. The award is accompanied by a plaque and a $2,000 honorarium.

Steinhardt Prize - Nomination Process:

Submission packets should include a letter of justification and supporting documentation and evidence. The deadline for nominations for the 2022 Steinhardt Prize is 1 July 2022 Nomination packets should be submitted to the MAS J. Steinhardt Prize Chair, Prof. Jeff Kline at jekline at nps.edu<mailto:jekline at nps.edu> by 1 July. If awarded, the J. Steinhardt Prize will be presented during the MAS Business Meeting at the INFORMS Annual Meeting.

Criteria

The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to Military Operations Research and is awarded for life work rather than for any particular contribution. While there is no specific list of attributes; they are basically technical expertise, teaching (viewed broadly), and MAS service.

Following is a general outline of data requested for each nomination package.

Part II: Contributions and Impacts
SERVICE AND MILITARY OPERATIONS RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS
MAS service, INFORMS service, service to other societies

TEACHING
Formal teaching: courses, grad students
Less formal: tutorials, mentoring, etc.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Previous awards and honors
Publications (approximate total number and titles of some of them) plus anything else that is germane

Note this award is open to those who have had either academic, professional, or military careers.


How will submissions be evaluated?

The nomination should include a dossier of the candidate's achievements and eligibility for the award and should be accompanied with a curriculum vita and/or a biography. Candidates may self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague. Specifically, the nomination should address the following aspects of the nominee's lifetime contributions, each of which will be given equal consideration:

  1.
     *   Theory: Evidence of the advancement of the models and solution methodologies to address problems of interest in the military and/or security research domains.

     *   Application: Evidence of the impact of research and/or analysis upon decision- making and operations of military- or security-related organizations.

     *   Expertise: Evidence of recognized technical expertise via a combination of formal education and/or technical leadership experience.

     *   Development of researchers: Evidence of effective teaching, mentoring, and development of analysts in the military and/or security domains.

     *   Service: Demonstrated leadership in professional service organizations in the domains of military and/or security analysis, specifically including (but not limited to) both INFORMS and MAS.
