doctoral students/recent graduates. This is for a Research Scientist
position in the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE), an
institute of advanced studies at Binghamton University. WISE generates
~$3.0 million in sponsored research annually and currently funds 75+
Graduate Research Associates (MS & PhD students).
We are primarily interested in candidates with expertise in data
science/analytics and/or applied operations research/optimization, with
special focus in the area of health systems/healthcare delivery. However,
candidates with expertise in other areas (e.g., energy, manufacturing) will
be considered. Please refer to the description below for more information.

The Research Foundation for The State University of New York (SUNY) is the

The Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE) is a research-intensive
multidisciplinary organization that works in a collaborative manner with
several industrial partners including IBM, Google, Innovation Associates,
Analog Devices, United Health Services, Mount Sinai Health System, Memorial
Sloan Kettering, LiveOnNY, Cooper Health, and Montefiore Medical Center.
With over 65 graduate students (MS and PhD) and several research faculty
and staff members, WISE is a dynamic customer-driven student-centered
organization. On average, WISE is awarded $2.5-3.0 million in research
grants a year. The Research Scientist we are looking to hire interacts with
faculty, staff, students, industry, campus entities, and a variety of
stakeholders in our research mission.
Job Description: Reporting to and working closely with the WISE Director
and faculty, the Research Scientist primarily assists faculty on sponsored
research projects in applied operations research/optimization and/or data
science/mining/analytics with special focus in domains such as healthcare
systems, manufacturing and enterprise systems. Other expectations:
· Write proposals to secure federal and state grants, and to industry to
expand the breadth of current research.
· Mentor and advise graduate research associates.
· Publish research findings in leading peer-reviewed journals and at
high-impact conferences.
· Work effectively with faculty, staff, and graduate research associates,
and to do so in diverse teams.
· Conceptualize, plan, and execute projects.
· Make independent judgments, not only in project conceptualization and
planning, but also in proposal submission, project design, identifying time
lines, milestones, and due dates.
· Prepare and present research-project related findings to industry
sponsors, faculty, and staff.
· Systematically document progress in research projects through technical
reports and presentations.
· Identify new areas of inquiry in-line with WISE's mission and could
garner external support.
· Willingness to travel to industry or federal sponsor locations for
progress review meetings.
· Work on other related projects as assigned.
Requirements:
· Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or a related field.
· In-depth knowledge of domains such as healthcare systems, manufacturing
and enterprise systems, with special focus on methodologies such as
applied operations research/optimization, simulation and modeling, and data
science.
· Experience in academia and/or in an healthcare/industrial/manufacturing
setting having planned, executed, and have completed various research
projects
· Demonstrate excellent program management and communication skills
(verbal, and written).
· Possess the ability to concurrently work on multiple projects with
minimal oversight.
· Ability to travel regularly to WISE sponsors for project review meetings
Salary/Benefits/Application: The salary range is $65,000 (commensurate with
