Posted on behalf of the book editors - this is a great opportunity for you and your students to become part of a book on Sustainability and AI research with an emphasis on women led investigative teams. Alice Smith (Auburn University)
We cordially invite you and your collaborators (if applicable) to submit a chapter covering your recent work in the fields of AI and sustainability. Subject to peer review, your contribution will be included in a new volume of the Springer book series Women in Engineering and Science<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.springer.com%2Fseries%2F15424%2Fbooks%3Fpage%3D1&data=05%7C01%7Csmithae%40auburn.edu%7Cdf16d08239254639ef2508dad6c6b680%7Cccb6deedbd294b388979d72780f62d3b%7C1%7C0%7C638058446390715870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Q1ZvxvLLF%2FWITAtlVe0Fr0infOkYRVnSj0KLrKKJm%2BQ%3D&reserved=0>, co-edited by Dr Alina Patelli and Prof Aniko Ekart.
The book series' selling point
The Springer book series Women in Engineering and Science<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.springer.com%2Fseries%2F15424%2Fbooks%3Fpage%3D1&data=05%7C01%7Csmithae%40auburn.edu%7Cdf16d08239254639ef2508dad6c6b680%7Cccb6deedbd294b388979d72780f62d3b%7C1%7C0%7C638058446390715870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Q1ZvxvLLF%2FWITAtlVe0Fr0infOkYRVnSj0KLrKKJm%2BQ%3D&reserved=0> promotes the accomplishments of female researchers and practitioners working in STEM. The various volumes in the series illuminate key contemporary contributions to critical areas of engineering and science, made by women and their collaborators. The salient focus of the series is to showcase success stories that inspire other women to start, continue or expand their STEM work providing theoretical insights into current world problems, building tools and applications aimed at addressing global challenges and developing methodologies and frameworks designed to speed up progress towards achieving critical targets in a principled, sustainable manner. To that end, we invite contributions from female lead authors, yet impose no restrictions on their collaborators and co-authors.
Highlights
The series aims to:

  * Communicate high quality research on topics essential to the wellbeing of humanity
  * Increase the impact of STEM work by disseminating it to the international readership of a prestigious publisher
  * Provide role models to early career women scientists working in STEM (to that end, the non-traditional author biographies emphasise the development of women from the beginning of their professional paths up to achieving established status)
This volume
Artificial Intelligence is at the forefront of technological advancement towards a sustainable future. However, when deployed in the real world, AI powered systems are notoriously avid consumers of energy resources, offsetting part or all of the sustainability benefits they are intended to yield (for additional context, a well-articulated, multi-faceted analysis of the relationship between AI and the environment is available here<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flink.springer.com%2Farticle%2F10.1007%2Fs43681-021-00043-6%23%3A~%3Atext%3DIn%2520this%2520paper%2520I%2520propose%2Cecological%2520integrity%2520and%2520social%2520justice&data=05%7C01%7Csmithae%40auburn.edu%7Cdf16d08239254639ef2508dad6c6b680%7Cccb6deedbd294b388979d72780f62d3b%7C1%7C0%7C638058446390872090%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=J6k%2B4KwoPl4ucyRDUXBxewDTFuFG8XAItKF2xlnXc3w%3D&reserved=0>). We thus propose "AI and Sustainability" as a topic for a new volume to be included in the Women in Engineering and Science<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.springer.com%2Fseries%2F15424%2Fbooks%3Fpage%3D1&data=05%7C01%7Csmithae%40auburn.edu%7Cdf16d08239254639ef2508dad6c6b680%7Cccb6deedbd294b388979d72780f62d3b%7C1%7C0%7C638058446390872090%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=3UPeCpr3zW%2Bhf35ku%2FrrkZx262OCDBljj%2B84GTclMfE%3D&reserved=0> series. Our aim is to promote women-lead innovation in the safety-critical field of sustainable AI developed to address the sustainability challenge at all levels (local, regional, national, continental and planetary).
