Dear Colleagues,

Please forward our open teaching faculty position in engineering management to interested candidates. This position is supported by the Emrick & Joan Webb Endowment.

DANIEL J. EPSTEIN DEPT. OF INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
Open Teaching Faculty Position in Systems, Projects, and Engineering Management

The University of Southern California, one of the nation's top research universities, seeks a candidate for a teaching position (Lecturer or higher rank) to teach undergraduate and graduate students in courses offered by the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, teaching-track faculty position on the non-tenure track.

The USC Viterbi School is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty, and welcomes applications from women, individuals from racial/ethnic populations demographically underrepresented in engineering, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Competitive candidates will have the training and experience to teach effectively in a highly-ranked department that advances undergraduate students through an accredited B.S. degree program, and graduate students enrolled in world-class M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience and expertise in the areas of Engineering Management, Systems Engineering, and Project Management, and able to teach courses in subjects including, but not limited to, the following:

  * Engineering project management: Understanding customers and their system of values, planning and starting engineering projects, project management techniques for complex engineering projects, creating credible estimates for schedule and cost, engineering economics for projects, the intersection between project management and systems engineering
  * Systems engineering: The system life-cycle, the systems method, balancing a system design against many constraints (both technical and social), case studies in design and systems
  * Engineering teams: Creating motivated and aligned project teams, identifying and resolving conflict, organizing and optimizing teams
  * Management of strategic technology: Entrepreneurship in various settings, writing winning proposals, creating credibility for a set of technology-based recommendations, case studies in entrepreneurship

A candidate with strong connections to industrial partners is especially encouraged to apply. Additional responsibilities of the position could be to help instruct and facilitate educational projects performed by our senior-year undergraduates with local industry.

A candidate with appropriate qualifications may also be considered for an appointment to serve as the Webb Endowed Executive Director of our Masters of Science degree program in Engineering Management. The responsibilities of this position include (in addition to teaching) oversight of degree requirements, recruitment and advisement of students, coordination with the department in recruiting and selecting instructors for courses, among other duties.

We invite applications from candidates knowledgeable in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and will focus on a candidate's experience, track-record, and their potential during the review process. The position will require the majority of effort to be spent on teaching and teaching-related duties. An earned doctorate degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering or a closely related field is preferred. While we seek applications at the rank of Lecturer, in exceptional cases applicants with longer and more accomplished teaching experience and/or other significant credentials may also be considered for a commensurate higher-ranked position (e.g., Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor of Practice, or Professor of Practice).

The anticipated start date is 16 August 2023. Candidates should apply at https://usccareers.usc.edu/job/los-angeles/open-rank-lecturer-of-industrial-and-systems-engineering/1209/39055686912. Applications must include a cover letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, a teaching statement (up to 2 pages), and names of at least three professional references (at least two of whom must be familiar with and able to comment on the applicant's teaching experience). Applicants should include a succinct statement on fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. Applications should be submitted by 16 January 2023 in order to receive full consideration; applications received after this deadline might not be considered.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is among the top engineering schools in the world. Department faculty engage in interdisciplinary research through the school's research centers, including the Information Sciences Institute, the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Threats and Emergencies, the National Center for Metropolitan Transportation Research, the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society, the Center for Research and Education in AI and Learning, and the Center for Advanced Manufacturing.
