Message to our Outgoing M&D President - Lourdes Medina

As our M&D President, Dr. Lourdes Medina, approaches the end of her term
with this final newsletter, I decided to cast this introductory portion of
the newsletter as a token of appreciation. Over eight year of very active
involvement from Dr. Lourdes Medina in the M&D division, she has shown
exceptional dedication, commitment, and leadership that have represented
notable contributions to the division.

Dr. Medina has assumed multiple leadership roles within M&D, concluding
with her presidency over the 2019-2021 period. It is extremely challenging
to summarize Dr. Medina's contributions in a single introductory note, but
I emphasize her contribution to establish new IISE M&D awards, securing
sponsorship to bring more qualified and deserving students to the IISE
Annual Conference, contributing to multiple M&D and Engineering Education
tracks at the IISE Annual Conference, but most important of all: creating a
sense of community in the division. I vividly remember in the beginning of
her presidency, she suggested that we start adopting the term (board
volunteers) rather than (board member) to emphasize the importance of the
institution/division, not the personnel.

Indeed, Dr. Medina was a role model of how a leader should act and lead by
example. As she gets ready to conclude her term and continue contributing
as an advisor to the board, the M&D division would like to extend sincerest
thanks to her contributions. She has left a great legacy that will provide
excellent legacy and starting point to our incoming President, Dr. Guha
Manogharan.

As I wrap this note up, I encourage our division members to extend their
appreciation to Dr. Medina and to all board volunteers (shown in the Zoom
Screenshot below) for their contributions and I look forward to virtually
see you soon during the IISE Annual Conference.

*Accelerated Cross-system Certification for Additive Manufacturing via
Privacy-preserving Modeling *

* Wenmeng Tian, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Industrial and Systems
Engineering, *
*Mississippi State University*

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes provide the capability to fabricate
customized lightweight components that are challenging using traditional
manufacturing technologies (Thompson et al. 2015; Kim, Lin, and Tseng 2018).
However, AM processes are prone to uncertainties, leading to defects in
fabricated components. This will significantly compromise the mechanical
properties and performance of the fabricated components which hinders the
broader adoption of AM in mission-critical applications (Waller et al.
2014; Kerwien et al. 2013; Seifi et al. 2017)

Advanced machine learning methods leverage massive data to characterize the
process-
defect relationship for AM certification

(Rao et al. 2015; Mahmoudi, Ezzat, and Elwany 2019; Khanzadeh et al. 2018;
2019). However, some AM-fabricated parts (e.g., metal components) are
costly and time consuming, making it cumbersome to collect sufficient data
for reliable modeling of each system. Though feasible in theory (Sabbaghi
and Huang 2018; Francis et al. 2020), combining data from multiple systems
on a data sharing platform is unrealistic due to AM users' intention of
protecting their intellectual property (IP) (Yampolskiy et al. 2014; Hu et
al. 2020). What is lacking, therefore, is a holistic strategy to share
knowledge learned from different systems without sharing their IP
information. To streamline the scale-up of AM technologies, it is critical
to establish a privacy-preserving data sharing framework to enable
process-defect modeling by leveraging data of multiple AM systems without
disclosing design information. To establish the data sharing framework, we
need to achieve the following objectives, as illustrated in
Figure 1.

*Construct privacy-preserving process features. *The AM process variability
can be decomposed into two major components, i.e., one assignable to
product design, and the other assignable to process quality. Guided by
process physics knowledge, data decomposition methods, such as tensor
decomposition, can be used to decouple these two components and thus
decouple product design information from the process data. The resulting
de-coupled process features contain information regarding process quality
with process design information masked, which will be shared to the data
sharing platform without disclosing product design information.

*Establish cross-system process-defect relationship.* The de-coupled
process features can be combined for cross-system process-defect modeling
through transfer learning to characterize intra-system and inter-system
variability. The resulting model will be used in accelerated cross-system
certification, which significantly reduces the data necessary to train an
accurate machine learning model.
By securely integrating data from multiple systems, the proposed framework
will significantly reduce the need for excessive experiments, which enables
accelerated AM material development and certification. The data sharing
framework is expected to break the major barrier that hinders broader
collaboration among AM users, resulting in unprecedented knowledge
acquisition and sharing in a smart yet secured manner. Furthermore, the
proposed research will establish a theoretical foundation for a secured
Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform, through which small and
medium-sized manufacturers can take full advantage of AM technologies in
their Research and Development (R&D) activities.
