*Message from the President*

Dear Manufacturing and Design Division Members,

As I reach my eight years of volunteering at the Manufacturing and Design
Division Board, I share the great satisfaction of seeing the growth and
development of our community. As part of this service, seven years ago I
had the opportunity to write the very first newsletter. Today, I celebrate
the upcoming team that will continue the leadership of this division after
our Annual Conference. We have an outstanding group of candidates nominated
to become part of the board for 2021-2023. In this newsletter we share with
you their information as you prepare to vote for them in the upcoming
weeks.
*Your vote is very important, election will be open from March 1 to March
18.*

I want to highlight that this year we have new opportunities for students,
practitioners and academicians in the manufacturing and design fields. *All
these opportunities are due on Sunday February 28 @ 5:00 PM. *In addition
to the Student Best Paper Award, this year we are *Sponsoring Students to
enjoy the IISE Annual VIRTUAL Conference* thanks to the sponsorships
received from: University of Arkansas, The University of Tennessee,
Rochester Institute of Technology, Binghamton University, North Carolina
State University and my beloved alma matter The Pennsylvania State
University.

We are happy to recognize our practitioners through our *new award:* *M&D
Outstanding Practitioner Award*. Considering the amazing job that you are
doing teaching manufacturing and design concepts, we created the *new
award: M&D Outstanding Teaching Award. *Practitioners and academicians can
also be nominated to our *M&D* *Outstanding Service Award* and *M&D Young
Investigator Award*. Please share this information with your students and
colleagues working in government, industry and academia. You can find more
details about these awards in this newsletter.

Why are these recognitions important? Jonas Salk, an important scientist of
the twentieth century who created the first polio vaccine once said: "The
reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more". We look forward
motivating you to do more!

Message From the Editor

Welcome to the February 2021 M&D November Newsletter. In this issue, we are
excited to announce new M&D division awards, spanning qualified community
members at different stages from students to academicians to industrial
practitioners. We encourage you to seek nomination for one of these awards,
or to nominate a person whom you see as a good fit for one of the awards.
Through our student article, we highlight an inspirational story of a high
school student who won a best paper award at the M&D division (we are proud
of you, Roma Desai). Finally, we announce our upcoming webinar to be given
by one of our most generous contributors to the M&D division, Prof. Denis

I have always been a curious individual and enjoyed probing new concepts
and facts. As a child, I would constantly "challenge" my parents with a
variety of questions -- a trait with which I am guilty until today.
Spending time with my dad asking him questions about his research and
visiting his lab provided me with the foundation to explore new ideas.

I can still vividly remember, sitting at the District Science Fair Awards
Ceremony with my legs swinging back and forth, anxiously waiting for my
name to be called. Time passed, the honorable mentions were announced, and
still no mention of my name. It was my first time entering a science-based
competition as a first grader. I was intimidated by the idea of developing
my own research project, let alone presenting it. Nonetheless, my parents
believed in me and continued encouraging me to compete. This confidence
compelled me to enter the Science Fair and compete amongst other peers,
ultimately winning first place. This was my first experience developing an
experiment and observing the end result -- one that matched my hypothesis
-- which particularly sparked an interest in my ripe 6-year-old mind.
Subsequently, this experience gave me a newfound confidence to participate
in science-based activities.

Following this experience, I became determined to learn more the scientific
research and began participating in science fairs and visiting my dad's lab
more frequently. As I approached middle school, I began to develop vested
interest in learning about new technologies, specifically 3D Printing more
rigorously known as additive manufacturing. Recent news articles about
radiation from cellular devices caught my attention, and I began exploring
the use of customized shields for cellular devices. I 3D printed a
customized shield using a bismuth filled ABS filament that reduced the
emission of electromagnetic radiation from cellular devices.

In order to fabricate the 3D printed case, I interned at a lab at the North
Carolina A&T State University. Throughout the 3D printing process, I was
challenged by various obstacles, with the most prominent of which was not
being able to properly print the Bismuth infilled filament and making sure
it adhered to the 3D printer build place. To resolve this issue, I decided
to use an external heater (hair dryer) to heat the bed. However, this
approach did not work, and thus I decided to use a 3D printer with bed
heating capability -- which was the right approach. I also employed a
makeshift enclosure to retain the heat within the 3D printed region. Within
the study, I conducted various experiments using an Electromagnetic
Frequency Meter (EMF) and assigned controls and protocols to ensure that
systematic measurements were completed for different 3D printed designs for
the cellular device. These aspects of the research helped me gain a deeper
understanding of developing a reproducible methodology and writing a
detailed research paper. In addition, tackling various challenges with the
3D printer and fabrication of the customized shield taught me the
importance of grit and perseverance.

Recently, I had the opportunity to write an article and present it at the
IISE Annual Conference 2020, in which I was able to interact with various
professionals in this field, particularly at the Manufacturing & Design
Town Hall meeting. As a high school student, I found the experience of
presenting to a large technical audience to be highly inspiring. I am
grateful for this opportunity and believe that such experiences would be
beneficial to other high school STEM students (like me) in developing
concrete research and presentation skills.

As a high-school student, I truly believe that engaging in experiences
involving professional conferences (such as the ISERC) can lead to pathways
for building confidence in students inclined towards the STEM field. We,
high school students, will be well-positioned for our undergraduate degrees
with these experiences. Participation at the ISERC 2020, has had a lasting
impact for which I am very grateful.

I would like to express my deep gratitude to my parents, who have
continuously supported my endeavors and represented great inspiration for
me. In addition, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Manufacturing
and Design Division and the Industrial and Systems Engineers community for
this humbling opportunity.

*Bio:*
Denis Cormier is the Earl W. Brinkman Professor of Industrial and Systems
Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology where he also directs the
New York State Additive Manufacturing and Multifunctional Printing Center.
He has worked in the area of additive manufacturing and 3D printing for
nearly 25 years. Much of his research has focused on metal additive
manufacturing of aerospace alloys and engineering lattice structures. He
was a founding member of ASTM's F-42 additive manufacturing standards
group, and he is a long-time organizing committee member for SME's RAPID
conference and exhibition. He serves on the editorial advisory boards for
several journals including Additive Manufacturing, the Rapid Prototyping
Journal.
