Greetings! As I reflect on a full academic year under the pandemic and the challenges to our society and educational systems, I am surprised that the interruptions to both our faculty and students were not as severe as they could have been. I have seen resilience, teamwork, and hard work among our students, faculty, and staff to cope with our unplanned situation. Despite the pandemic, the IME Department student body has grown to about 620 total students in our four programs: BS in Industrial Engineering, BS in Manufacturing Engineering, MS in Engineering Management, and MS in Systems Engineering. Now that we can document our forced virtual teaching’s successes and shortcomings, our faculty can focus more on the “learn by doing” teaching philosophy in a hybrid format. Our graduates continue to tell us they entered the workforce feeling prepared and hopeful. One of our primary goals is to position ourselves to provide the kind of teaching and learning that Industry 4.0 will require.

The M.S. in Systems Engineering<https://www.cpp.edu/ceu/degree-programs/system-engineering/index.shtml> at Cal Poly Pomona was launched in Fall 2015 with less than 10 students and has grown to more than 30 students, from various engineering backgrounds, in Spring 2021. Graduates have been hired by corporations in aerospace industries, defense contractors, commercial manufacturers, utility and communication companies, in addition to healthcare. The program is currently fully online, with some elements of face-to-face instructions. Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on how to design, develop, lead, implement and evaluate complex systems.

Dr. Fallah-Fini has extensive experience in the application of systems engineering techniques on modeling and analysis of complex socio-technical systems, with applications in public health, food systems, and civil infrastructure systems. She has worked extensively with researchers at the National Institute of Health in the US, New Zealand, Japan, and Belgium. One of the key issues with using UAVs as a transportation mode is their limited flying range. Flight range can be improved by using battery swapping stations where UAVs can replace their depleted batteries and continue their fights. In this research, Dr. Parsa and his colleagues developed a mathematical model to construct a network of such stations in order to support UAVs in long-range delivery operations. Dr. Mirzaei is a recipient of the 2021 Research Scholarly and Creative Activities (RSCA) Grant. The objective of her research is to employ statistical quality control methods for regression testing of complex systems, especially aircraft. In this context, regression testing is defined as the re-implementation of an aircraft system capability test to provide evidence that a previously developed and tested system still performs at least as well as it did initially.
