OUR NEW FACULTY

[http://i3.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/AminRahimian_below2mb.104138.png]Amin Rahimian

Before joining our department this fall, Amin Rahimian was a postdoc with joint appointments at MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) and MIT Sloan School of Management. He did his PhD in Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Amin was recently published in the peer-reviewed PNAS, the official journal of the National Academy of Sciences, produced in collaboration with colleagues at MIT. The article can be accessed here.<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Funiversityofpittsburghswansonschoolofengineering.cmail20.com%2Ft%2Fr-i-jujrhhlk-l-h%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cbidanda%40pitt.edu%7C0af062ec52ef43f24d6208d87a7db1a3%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637394027551024530%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=a6BSgNm5bUClxGdsz%2B59JB3ijftVZefnktgdi5mdbL4%3D&reserved=0>

[http://i4.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/Hinder2.104358.jpg]Oliver Hinder

Oliver joined the department this fall as an Assistant Professor. He recently completed his post-doctorate as a researcher at Google in the Optimization and Algorithms group in New York. Oliver received his Ph.D. from the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. His research focuses on continuous optimization, with a penchant for local optimization methods such as gradient descent. This research is motivated by applications in network optimization and machine learning that push the limits of current computational capabilities.

[http://i5.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/jlamperski.103212.jpg]Jourdain Lamperski

Jourdain received his PhD in Operation Research at MIT. Prior to MIT, he received his B.S. in Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. Broadly speaking, he works on optimization and machine learning problems. At the moment, he is interested in using techniques from continuous and discrete optimization to develop new tools for solving linear inequality systems. He is also interested in healthcare applications.

AWARDS

[http://i6.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/bedewy.105931.jpg]Assistant Professor, Mostafa Bedewy, was awarded the M&D Outstanding Young Investigator Award by M&D Division of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers. The award recognizes outstanding early-career M&D Division members, who have made "high impact scientific contributions to the manufacturing and design field as evidenced by their research endeavors including publications, intellectual property and other funding and dissemination activities."

[http://i7.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/vidic.110107.jpg]Assistant Professor, Natasa Vidic, was awarded the 2020 Outstanding Educator Award by U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering James R. Martin II on behalf of the Swanson School of Engineering. This competitive award recognizes her excellence in teaching and innovative work in improving learning methodologies for undergraduate students.

[http://i8.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/haight.110235.jpg]Professor Joel Haight was awarded the IISE Boeing Excellence Award for Collaboration in Productivity, Workplace Safety and Ergonomics for 2020. Additionally, he was awarded a $500K research grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Dr. Haight's project studies the transition to automated systems in the mining industry in Australia, Sweden, Chile, US and Canada.

GRANTS

[http://i9.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/leuuu.110326.jpg]LAMP Research Group, led by Associate Professor Paul Leu, were awarded a $50,000 American-Made Solar Prize, for their project "Durable Antireflective and Self-Cleaning Glass". American-Made Solar Prize is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) competition designed to incentivize entrepreneurs toward U.S. solar energy innovation and manufacturing.

Dr. Leu and the LAMP Lab were also awarded the first round of the CMI's Early-Stage Medical Technology Research and Development fund for their proposal titled "Wash-Stable and Mechanically Durable Anti-Virofouling Medical Textiles."

Additionally, on September 8th Dr. Leu and Industry Liaison Liza Allison, in collaboration with Case Western University, submitted their NSF IUCRC full proposal for the MDS-Rely Research Center <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Funiversityofpittsburghswansonschoolofengineering.cmail20.com%2Ft%2Fr-i-jujrhhlk-l-k%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cbidanda%40pitt.edu%7C0af062ec52ef43f24d6208d87a7db1a3%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637394027551034483%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=JmWgcTgxr7%2BJzw6pUeUG4%2FsvVc5UKloikpsiwlnbVvg%3D&reserved=0> (Center for Materials Data Science for Reliability and Degradation).

[http://i10.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/mostafa.093545.JPG]Mostafa Bedewy has been awarded a $240K NSF EAGER award for his project "Transforming Flexible Device Manufacturing by Bottom-up Growth of Nanocarbons Directly on Polymers". Fabrication of flexible and wearable electronics often requires integrating various types of advanced carbon nanomaterials - such as graphene, nanotubes, and nanoporous carbon - because of their remarkable electrical, thermal, and chemical properties. However, the extreme environments needed to chemically synthesize these nanomaterials means they can only be fabricated on rigid surfaces that can withstand high temperatures. Printing already-made nanocarbons onto flexible polymeric materials is generally the only option, but limits the potential customization. To overcome this limitation, Mostafa's team is investigating a new scalable manufacturing method for creating customizable types of nanocarbons on-demand - directly where they are needed - on flexible materials.

[http://i1.cmail20.com/ei/r/B8/7CB/72E/csimport/chun.110528.jpg]Associate Professor Youngjae Chun and his colleagues received an award of $120,000 from the Children's Heart Foundation's Liam Ward Fund. His research involves the development of a new type of metallic frame for pediatric heart valves that could not only be placed by a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure but would also grow with the child, eliminating the need for follow-up surgeries.
