Postdoc Research Associate; or Research Faculty (depending on experience)

Position Description

The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is seeking a Postdoc Research
Associate or Research Faculty to conduct research on the design and
development of Model Based Systems Engineering applications for a variety
of complex systems applications. This position is in support of a funded
research project with the Y-12 National Nuclear Security Complex part of
the National Nuclear Security Administration and U.S. Department of Energy.
This is expected to be a three-year position.

This position will provide a unique opportunity to be a foundational member
in the start-up and operation of the Systems Application and Development
Integrative Environment (SADIE) Lab. SADIE is a technology application and
research laboratory at the University of Tennessee grown out of the
partnership between the College of Nursing and the Tickle College of
Engineering that combines the intellectual and resource strengths from
across the University to address challenges using technology and
system-based approaches. The concept and implementation of SADIE arose out
of efforts sponsored by the Y12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge,
Tennessee.

The successful candidate will work directly with the sponsoring
organization as well as the depth and breadth of the University of
Tennessee. It is expected that successful completion of this assignment
will lead to placement opportunities within affiliated organizations.

The SADIE Lab is intended to be a showcase facility to support advanced
systems computer modeling and simulation including comprehensive suites of
computer software, hardware, networking and data visualization capability.
SADIE is also designed to include dry-lab space for sensor work,
sensor-data fusion and prototyping. SADIE will engage other labs at the
University to provide an integrated comprehensive resource base to its
partner organizations. SADIE’s initial focus is to support its current
research effort to support the application of complex systems technology
and reduction of research to fieldable products. As the Lab infrastructure
is completed SADIE will expand its interactions with organizations such as
the Veterans Administration, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality,
Department of Homeland Security, and National Nuclear Security
Administration.

Responsibilities

· Conduct research and technology application related to the
development of computer simulations for complex processes and operations

· Support the setup and expansion of the SADIE Lab

· Evaluate simulation approaches and implement computer simulations
using approaches that might include approaches such as agent-based models,
discrete event simulations, systems dynamics models, probabilistic models,
Bayesian belief systems, Monte Carlo simulations and other modeling
approaches. Of particular interest are approaches related to multi-method
modeling

· Use of computer simulations and modeling for predictive analytics and
“what-if” scenarios

· Create Enhanced data visualization and dashboard representation for
decision support and analysis

· Support project management including writing progress reports

· Prepare manuscripts for publication of research results

· Attend and participate in group meetings

· Provide the PI/Co-PIs with models developed, data generated, and
documentation

· Prepare and submit technical progress report

· Support, and lead the effort for technical project management

· As appropriate, pursue the technology transfer or commercialization
of technology in support of University objectives

· Develop predictive models related to systems projects

· Implement machine learning and/or natural language processing
algorithms for advancing current and new projects

· Contribute to writing grant proposals

· Work with graduate, undergraduate students, technicians, faculty and
collaborators involved in SADIE projects, supervise graduate and
undergraduate researchers in research projects

Required Education and Experience

· PhD in Industrial/Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Data
Analytics or related field with relevant research experience

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Entrepreneurial and innovative spirit

· Prior experience in developing computer simulations in the previously
mentioned domains e.g. agent-based modeling, discrete event simulation,
etc.)

· Familiarity with simulation software such as AnyLogic, ExtendSim,
MatLab, Arena, FlexSim, NetLogo, Vensim, or Wolfram. Experience in
programming with Java, Python, or other suitable computer languages is a
plus.

· Prior experience working with databases

· Ability to multitask and work cooperatively in a team environment
with faculty and students.

· Publish in and present at top journals and conferences, respectively.
