Dear IE Faculty:
On behalf of the Department of Systems Engineering and Operations Research at George Mason University, I invite student design teams in your department (undergraduate and master's level) to participate in the 4th Annual Andrew P. Sage Memorial Capstone Design Competition. The conference will be held online on Monday, April 26, 2021.
Professor Andrew P. Sage was one of the Founding Fathers of the field of Systems Engineering and was the Founding Dean of the Engineering School at George Mason University.
The year 2020 is sure to go down in history as one of the most challenging years. With COVID-19 not yet under controll, the world is in urgent need of great advancements in science and engineering to get to a new norm. The Systems Engineering field was developed to help deal with this type of challenges with growing uncertainty and complexity. The classical emphasis on our core values of science, mathematics and technical rigor are being enhanced with the engineering process controls and analysis techniques to deal with the more complex and urgent questions. What should we be designing, why and how will it achieve the design's goals within the framework of public needs and microeconomic constraints are key issues.
The Sage Competition will consist of both a technical paper and a 25-minute oral presentation. Both the quality of the technical paper and the oral presentation will be judged by an independent 3-person faculty/industry panel. The scores will be weighed equally. The paper should be submitted in the IEEE format and not exceed 8 pages.
Submitted papers will be divided into tracks based on topics of the papers. In the past our conferences have included specialty tracks in the following areas of concentration:
* Military Systems
* Environmental Systems
* Energy Systems
* Health Care - Bio-Medical Systems
* Systems Digital Engineering
* Aerospace Systems
* Infrastructure Systems
* Decision Support Systems
* Cyber Physical Systems
* Master's degree Capstone Projects
The important dates related to the competition are as follows:
Abstract Due Feb. 26, 2021
Notification of Acceptance Mar. 9, 2021
Registration Deadline Mar. 19, 2021
Final Paper Due Apr. 19, 2021
Day of Competition Apr. 26, 2021
Abstracts should be 300-500 words and concisely summarize the project.
The conference will be online and fees for the conference participation will be waived.
For further information and intentions to participate, please contact any of the competition chairs:
Prof. Songjun Luo (sluo4 at gmu.edu, 703-993-3394) or
Prof. Lance Sherry (lsherry at gmu.edu, 703-993-2093).
The conference website and call for papers can be found at the following link: https://easychair.org/cfp/SMDC21.
Please pass this invitation to the faculty member in charge of your senior Capstone Design courses. We hope teams from your school can join us this year.
