Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or a closely related field and must have an exemplary record of achievement in research, teaching, and service at a level sufficient for appointment as a tenured full professor. Previous leadership experience in an academic setting and budget oversight experience are desired but not required. Applicants should demonstrate experience mentoring students and junior faculty, must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, and a commitment to excellence in teaching at both an undergraduate and graduate level. This position requires strong communication skills, unassailable personal and academic integrity, a focus on openness and transparency, and the ability to manage a diverse faculty. The Chair will work closely with leadership within the University and the department's constituents (faculty, staff, students, alumni, advisory board, and industry).
Department Information
The Department of Industrial Engineering (IE) has been a degree granting department since the late 1970s, growing out of an Engineering Management degree program that was established within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. IE currently has ten tenured or tenure-track faculty and three term faculty with wide-ranging research interests in operations research, applied optimization, human factors and ergonomics, simulation, reliability engineering, quality control, additive and advanced manufacturing, warehouse design, supply chain and logistics, energy systems modeling, and healthcare engineering. Faculty research (with research expenditures ranging between over half and close to one million per year in the past few years) has been supported by a variety of federal grants and industrial contracts (e.g., NSF, DoD, ONR, NIST, NASA, FHWA, Toyota, GE Appliances/Haier). The department has extensive interdisciplinary collaborations across several units at UofL, including Arts and Sciences, Social Work, Medicine, and Public Health, as well as with the other seven departments within the Speed School of Engineering.
The department offers ABET-accredited BS and MENG Degree, an MS Degree, and a PhD Degree, all in Industrial Engineering, as well as an MENG degree in Engineering Management Online (MEEMO), and an MENG degree in Engineering Management in Panama (MEngEMP). The enrollment for the fall of 2018 includes 150 undergraduates, 163 master's students (11 MENG, 4 MS, 121 MEEMO, 27 MEngEMP), and 19 PhD students. The University of Louisville offers excellent benefits including domestic partner benefits.
