The Department of Health Administration at the Virginia Commonwealth
University (VCU) is accepting applications for a *Postdoctoral Fellowship*
position in *Healthcare Analytics*. The postdoc will conduct research under
the supervision of Associate Professor Christian Wernz. The postdoc must
have interest and expertise in working with large healthcare data sets. He
or she will be working on two projects: (1) analysis and modeling of the
U.S. organ transplantation and matching system, and (2) data-driven
validation of a decision-theoretic model of physician behavior. In addition
to data analytics skills, the postdoc should have methodological expertise
in one or more operations research domains, such as decision
analysis/theory, simulation, or optimization. The postdoc will also have
the opportunity to teach a course on health analytics in our top-ranked
Master of Health Administration (MHA) program.
Dr. Wernz will actively *mentor* and *guide* the postdoc's professional
development in publishing, grant writing and teaching. Dr. Wernz has
received over $1.8 million in grant funding from the National Science
Foundation (NSF), the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), the
Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute, as well as industry and other
funding sources. His research has been published in top-tier operations
research, healthcare engineering, and health policy journals.
The Department of Health Administration is a *top 5 Healthcare Management
Program* (U.S. News & World Report). The department just moved into a brand
new building on VCU's medical campus, which houses all of the 11 units of
the College of Health Professions supporting a collaborative and
interdisciplinary research environment. Richmond is a diverse and thriving
city, with world-class museums, a vibrant food scene, and a variety of
outdoor activities.
The *position is available effective immediately* with a target start date
of January 2020. The initial appointment will be for one year and can be
extended depending on job performance and funding availability. By the
start date, the candidates should have completed a PhD in industrial
engineering, operations research, statistics, data science, health services
research, or related quantitative field. Selection criteria include depth
and breadth of methodological expertise, healthcare domain knowledge,
publication quality and quantity, grant writing experience, and teaching
record. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
