*Message from the President*
Dear Colleagues,
I am honored and humbled to serve you as the president of the Manufacturing
and Design Division. First, I would like to thank the amazing team of
volunteers that have accepted to serve the M&D community under my
leadership. I am happy to share that we have a diverse team of volunteers
that represent academia, government and industry. We are also working to
recruit STUDENTS!
I also want to recognize and thank all the volunteers that throughout the
years have made the difference helping in the growth of this division to
what we are today. To our members, thanks for your participation and
support in our division. I was excited to see many of you in our successful
town hall meeting during the IISE Annual Conference in Orlando.
During my tenure I would like to enhance your *active participation* in our
division with more opportunities to volunteer. As a part of the team
effort, I communicated with many of you after the town hall meeting. If you
did not have a chance to share your interest to volunteer, please let us
know through this survey

Multifunctional 3D Printing
*Presented by Professor Denis Cormier.*
*Abstract:*
3D Printing has traditionally been used to make mechanical, or structural,
components. However, a wide variety of materials can be printed that
perform other types of functions. For example, conductive circuit patterns
may be printed using silver nanoparticle inks (electronic functionality).
Copper microlattices may be printed to produce heat exchangers (thermal
functionality). Lead zirconate titanate inks can be printed to convert
mechanical energy into electrical energy. The list goes on and on with
magnetic, optical, biological, and other types of functional materials.
This webinar will discuss a variety of materials, 3D printing methods, and
applications that demonstrate the notion of multifunctional 3D printing.
*Bio:*
Denis Cormier is the Earl W. Brinkman Professor of Industrial and Systems
Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology where he also directs the
New York State Additive Manufacturing and Multifunctional Printing Center.
He has worked in the area of additive manufacturing and 3D printing for
nearly 25 years. Much of his research has focused on metal additive
manufacturing of aerospace alloys and engineering lattice structures. He
was a founding member of ASTM's F-42 additive manufacturing standards
group, and he is a long-time organizing committee member for SME's RAPID
conference and exhibition. He serves on the editorial advisory boards for
several journals including Additive Manufacturing, the Rapid Prototyping
Journal.

Dear colleagues,
The Manufacturing and Design Division of the Institute of Industrial &
Systems Engineers (IISE) is sponsoring the Manufacturing and Design Track
at the 2020 IISE Annual Conference & Expo. The conference is a forum for
exchanging knowledge and discoveries in the industrial and systems
engineering research and practitioner communities. The 2020 IISE Annual
Conference & Expo will continue to integrate research and industry
applications under one conference.
As track chairs of the Manufacturing and Design Track, we encourage you to
contribute to the conference and track by submitting a 1 pg. extended
abstract (template provided on the abstract submission website). Authors
will be able to claim these works as refereed extended abstracts, which
will be available on the conference website and can be cited. They will not
be copyrighted or indexed in the official conference proceedings, and
therefore there is no limitation on reusing extended abstract material for
other purposes (e.g., toward the publication of journal papers or
subsequent conference proceedings). Extended abstracts are welcome and read

*The Learning Factory b**y Austin Schorr, Penn State University*
Gaining industry experience while still undergoing schooling seems to be
limited to Co-Ops and internships acquired solely by the individual
student. The closest typical schoolwork can offer is second hand knowledge
at best. Penn State's Learning Factory is a unique and valuable asset
available to all PSU engineering students.
The Learning Factory provides all engineering students as close to a real
job experience as one could while still in the academic field. Handling all
College of Engineering capstone projects, 1,800 and counting, all of which
have been sponsor by 500 different internal and external sponsors*. I have
personally experienced this first hand while completing my Industrial
Engineering capstone project in the fall of 2018. I can firmly say that
Penn State's Learning Factory provided me and others the closest possible
experience to actual industry work through, scale of the overall project
the interdisciplinary teamwork, and freedom of the students. Read more here.
In Memorial - J Temple Black
By: Paul Cohen, Edgar S. Woolard Distinguished Professor
Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, North
Carolina State University
May 16, 2019 the Institute lost a long-time member, colleague, contributor
and friend as J Temple Black died just 25 days short of his 81st birthday.
J was active over his career with the Manufacturing and Design and
Operational Excellence (Lean) Divisions of the Institute. A Professor
Emeritus at Auburn University, he will be remembered as lead author of
*Degarmo's
Materials and Processes in Manufacturing* and for his pioneering research
in metal cutting and lean manufacturing. His scholarship and professional
contributions were recognized when he was elected a Fellow of IISE in 1999.
Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers and Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Born in Rahway, NJ he developed a passion for industrial and manufacturing
engineering as an undergraduate at Lehigh University and subsequently
received an MS from West Virginia University and Ph.D. from the University
of Illinois. While his early work was in materials processing be became
interested in manufacturing systems from his observations of how Japanese
automobiles were produced. This led to his research and books on lean
manufacturing. J's enthusiasm for the subject caused him to teach his lean
course in retirement and continue to provide guest lectures as late as fall
2018. He also had a creative side that saw him author poetry and record his
own songs.
