The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the College of Applied Health Sciences are searching for an Assistant Director of Research for the forthcoming Living in Interactive Future Environments (LIFE) Home research facility. This facility will be a campus hub for activities related to technologies for health and independence including: in-home sensors, wearables, human-computer interfaces, robotics, telemedicine, rehabilitation, home materials, smart appliances, indoor climate technologies, assistive devices, and communication technologies.

Overview: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (http://illinois.edu/ <http://illinois.edu/>) and the College of Applied Health Sciences (http://ahs.illinois.edu <http://ahs.illinois.edu/>) are searching for an Assistant Director of Research for the forthcoming Living in Interactive Future Environments (LIFE) Home research facility. This facility will be a campus hub for activities related to technologies for health and independence including: in-home sensors, wearables, human-computer interfaces, robotics, telemedicine, rehabilitation, home materials, smart appliances, indoor climate technologies, assistive devices, and communication technologies. The goals of research efforts performed in this facility will be to develop and test new technologies to support independent living, healthcare needs, social interaction, and community participation. We are also developing a unique professional Master of Science in Health Technology program that will be an integral to of the LIFE Home mission.
Position Details: We are seeking an Assistant or Associate (non-tenure track) Research Professor for a 12-month appointment (potentially renewable on 3-year contracts). This position serves key roles as technical expert, research investigator, and industry liaison for the research, educational, and engagement missions of the LIFE Home facility and the College of Applied Health Sciences revolving around health technology, smart home, and community technologies.

Proposed Starting Date: August 16, 2019 (negotiable).
Responsibilities: Contribute to research grant proposals as an investigator; serve on student, college, or campus committees; establish industry relationships and act as industry liaison; lead outreach efforts to promote the LIFE Home internally and externally through presentations, demonstrations, and tours, for stakeholders including faculty, industry, clinical and community partners, funding agencies. Contribute specific technical expertise to faculty, staff, and student research and course-related projects (including the Master of Science in Health Technology). Liaise with campus Office of Technology Management and Office of Corporate Relations; coordinate with College of AHS facilities, information technology, and administrative staff regarding LIFE Home functions; guest lecture in courses and supervise graduate and undergraduate research assistants assigned to the LIFE Home.
Qualifications: Applicants must hold a PhD in engineering (electrical, mechanical, industrial, systems, bio, computer sciences) or in a related field. Domain knowledge in health technology or smart home technologies is required as well as demonstrated experience in engineering or computer science; involvement on funded research and/or product development; ability to effectively work and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds such as academia, industry, and the community.
Preferred experience includes post-doctoral research; teaching and mentoring; industry involvement in sectors such as health technology, smart homes/buildings, or health care; entrepreneurial activities (prototyping, intellectual property, patents, licenses); grant writing; facility/home management (i.e., plumbing, electrical, HVAC); and experience with interdisciplinary research and development projects that integrate health technology, design, and social and behavioral sciences.
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience.
