The NSF-funded Operations and Systems Engineering for Extreme Event Research (OSEEER) initiative supports the establishment of a network of operations researchers that will develoop a science plan to address cross-cutting methodological challenges in research in the domain of hazards and disasters.  A principal focus of this work is on identifying potentially high-impact research problems that lie beyond the boundaries of existing disciplinary and interdisciplinary methods to address. Of particular interest is methodological innovation in the service of problems that address integrated human and machine aspects of the systems employed to mitigate or manage hazards and disasters.
