Smart Additive Manufacturing - Sensing, Monitoring, and Modeling for Zero Part Defects in Metal Additive Manufacturing

* Abstract:
This webcast will cover the presenter's recent published and ongoing work in in-process monitoring of defects, as well as fundamental thermal modeling of metal Additive manufacturing processes, such as laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition. In particular, the webinar will mainly cover in-process sensor-based monitoring for detection of defects, such as porosity in laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition metal AM processes. The seminar will also briefly summarize efforts towards thermal modeling of metal AM processes using discrete heat transfer modeling approaches.

* Presenter bio:
Dr. Prahalada Rao is currently an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His research focuses on sensor-based monitoring of complex systems, including advanced manufacturing processes, such as Additive Manufacturing. His work has been funded through multiple NSF awards; he was recently (2018) awarded the NSF CAREER award for sensor-based monitoring and control of additive manufacturing processes. He earned the 2017 Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Yoram Koren Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, and the 2018 IIE Transactions Best Paper Award.
