Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship in Healthcare Modeling / Healthcare Logistics

Industrial Engineering at Clemson University

To support his research in healthcare modeling and healthcare logistics, Dr. Kevin Taaffe is soliciting applications for a Ph.D. research assistant position for Fall 2016.

The research will focus on the surgical environment, including case scheduling, pre-admission testing, and all day-of-surgery processes (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative). The student should have interests in health operations research and operations management. In particular, Dr. Taaffe and his team are using various simulation and optimization modeling tools, along with mobile technology in real-time, to improve communication, coordination, and resource allocation on the day of surgery. An important research outcome will be identification of changes that will potentially improve patient safety, reduce costs and increase capacity.

Dr. Taaffe’s research program is highly dependent on close interaction with hospitals and healthcare systems across the state of South Carolina. In particular, he has active research grants where the collaborating institutions are Greenville Health System and the Medical University of South Carolina.

The selected applicant should have an industrial engineering or computer science background. Prior programming experience is strongly desired, as well as the ability to conduct research using simulation and optimization packages. Assistantship stipends will be very competitive.

Interested applicants should submit a current resume, a copy of university transcripts, and a 1-page letter describing why he or she would be a good fit for this research assistant position. Electronic submissions (PDF files) of these materials should be sent to Dr. Kevin Taaffe at taaffe at clemson.edu<mailto:taaffe at clemson.edu>. Review of materials will begin on December 1, 2015 and will continue until a student is selected. To be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program in Industrial Engineering, students should submit an application by January 1, 2016.
