Dear Colleagues,
The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) in the
Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton
University (The State University of New York at Binghamton), in conjunction
with the Binghamton University Alumni Association, announced a new *Executive
Master of Science in Health Systems *program just last year. Since then,
the first cohort of graduates has experienced notable success, and a second
cohort is now forming to begin this fall.
This 12-month program is designed to provide individuals (e.g., working
professionals) with a bachelor’s degree in any field the opportunity to
gain sufficient knowledge and skills for modeling, analyzing and/or
designing healthcare delivery systems and processes. As some of you might
have read already, a report (“Report to the President - Better Health Care
and Lower Costs: Accelerating Improvement Through Systems Engineering
<http://1.usa.gov/1mYkSRG>”) released by the President’s Council of
Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) just last month highlighted need
for greater use of systems engineering principles in healthcare. With
industry input, we have been refining these techniques in our program for
over a decade now, educating graduates who are prepared to be effective
upon entering the workplace.
Scheduled from August 2014 through August 2015, classes for our second
cohort will meet approximately once per week at a convenient midtown
Manhattan location. Class hours are typically Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5
p.m. with intermittent days off. In each class, the individual experiences
lectures, group activities, projects, and open discussions with a great
deal of class participation. Guest lecturers from the healthcare industry
also frequent the class. A required orientation weekend will be held at
Binghamton University’s main campus (Binghamton, NY) at the onset of the
program.
