Engineering  *

The Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE), an Institute for
Advanced Studies at Binghamton University (State University of New York),
would like to invite talented and driven individuals to apply for its
"Research Scientist" (Research Assistant Professor) position, with a focus
on healthcare systems engineering, starting September 8, 2014. This
position would be with the Research Foundation at Binghamton, New York. The
Research Foundation, founded in 1951, exists to serve SUNY and to
capitalize on the scope, scale and diversity of SUNY as an engine of New
York state’s innovation economy. The RF supports nearly $1 billion in SUNY
research activity annually, providing sponsored programs administration and
commercialization support services to SUNY faculty performing research in
numerous disciplines.

WISE is a research-intensive multidisciplinary organization that works in a
collaborative manner with several industrial partners including IBM,
Innovation Associates, Analog Devices, United Health Services, Virtua
Health, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Montefiore Medical Center. With
over 73 graduate students (MS and PhD) and several research faculty and
staff members, WISE is a dynamic customer-driven student-centered
organization. On average, WISE is awarded $2-3 million in research grants a
year. The Research Scientist (Research Assistant Professor) will interact
with faculty, staff, students, industry, campus entities, and variety of
stakeholders in our research mission.

The primary responsibilities are (i) assist faculty on healthcare sponsored
research projects, with responsibilities in other application areas, (ii)
write proposals to seek grants from federal and state agencies, and
industry to expand the breadth and depth of current research activities,
(iii) mentor and advise graduate research associates, and (iv) publish
research findings in scholarly journals and conferences. Other
responsibilities include (i) conceptualize, plan, and execute projects, and
manage several research associates, (ii) prepare and present
research-project related findings to healthcare and other industry
sponsors, faculty, and staff, (iii) identify new areas of inquiry which
would be in-line with WISE's mission and could garner external support, and
(iv) assist in other related projects as assigned.

The applicant must possess (i) a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering,
Healthcare Systems, or related fields with a preferred focus in either
Operations Research, Optimization, Supply-Chain Management and Logistics,
or Business Analytics by the appointment date (a Bachelor’s degree in
Engineering is required), (ii) in-depth knowledge in domains such as health
systems, applied operations research, simulation and modeling, quality
assurance, enterprise systems, design of experiments, and human factors,
(iii) excellent programming skills, and (iv) an ability to concurrently
work on multiple projects with minimal oversight. This position requires
extensive interaction with healthcare sponsors and other industries.
