Faculty Position in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure track position in the area of systems engineering. Individuals will be considered in any area of basic research in industrial or mechanical engineering that has the potential to impact the future of systems engineering, including healthcare systems, energy systems, manufacturing systems, and biological systems. The rank will be at the Assistant Professor level. While the teaching load of the individual will be the same as any other junior faculty members in the Department, the individual hired will have the unique opportunity to teach systems courses to honors undergraduate engineers and other honors students from around the University who are enrolled in the prestigious Commonwealth Honors College (CHC) program. CHC has been very successful at attracting gifted students, and this year is still further enriched by the recent addition of a $186.5 million dollar residential and teaching facility. In addition, faculty members are expected to teach graduate courses, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contribute significantly to the advance of basic science and engineering as evidenced by scholarly publications, and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research.
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has 26 full-time faculty members, over 130 graduate students, and over 766 undergraduates. Research expenditures exceeded $4.7M in the last fiscal year. A number of institutes and centers provide outstanding opportunities for faculty interested in systems engineering including the Wind Energy IGERT and Center for e-Design, both in the Department, and the Process Systems Engineering Consortium (PSEC), a collaboration between the Process Design and Control Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and process systems engineering faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Santa Barbara. The study of systems also pervades Department research programs in healthcare, supply chain, energy, networks, and human factors, creating numerous opportunities for collaboration. Finally, at the College level, consideration is being given to developing further graduate degrees in systems engineering, involving collaboration between faculty in the four different Departments within the College.
The University of Massachusetts is situated 90 miles west of Boston in the vicinity of four liberal arts colleges offering exceptional and diverse cultural and recreational opportunities within one of the most beautiful areas of New England.
Applicants must have a PhD in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field (degree by September, 2014). Candidates should provide the following in their application package: 1) Statement of interest, including a discussion of teaching experience and goals, especially as they relate to honors students, a discussion of research qualifications and goals, and a discussion of how the candidate’s teaching and research experience would add to existing departmental, college and university strengths; 2) Current curriculum vitae; 3) Representative recent original research articles; and 4) Letters of reference, sent directly by the referees, to systemseng at engin.umass.edu<mailto:systemseng at engin.umass.edu>. We require two letters in order to start the review, we recommend four. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2013 and continue until a suitable candidate is identified.
Application submission is strongly preferred via email in single PDF file to: http://umass.interviewexchange.com<http://umass.inerviewexchange.com>. If necessary, application materials can be mailed to Systems Search Committee, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, 160 Governors Drive, Amherst, MA 01003.
The University of Massachusetts is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. The Department, College, and University have a strong commitment to diversity. Women and Members of Minority Groups are encouraged to Apply.
The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity is critical to achieving the University's mission of excellence in education, research, educational access and service in an increasingly diverse globalized society. Therefore, in holistically assessing many qualifications of each applicant of any race or gender we would factor favorably an individual’s record of conduct that includes students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degree.
